Following a strong showing at this past weekend’s OUA Swimming Championships, Hochan Ryu (Richmond Hill, Ont.) from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Ryu, a fourth-year cognitive science major, won three gold medals and a silver medal in the pool as he helped the Varsity Blues win their 14th consecutive OUA championship banner.
In his biggest race of the championship, Ryu won the 400-m individual medley in a time of 4:16.12, breaking two-time Olympic gold medalist Alex Baumann's OUA record which was set back in 1984.
The Richmond Hill, Ont. native also struck gold in the 200-m butterfly (1:58.77) and silver in the 200-m individual medley (1:59.13)
In front a pro-Varsity Blues home crowd, Ryu also raced the second leg of Toronto's gold-medal winning 800-m freestyle relay team.
Next up, Ryu and the Varsity Blues will look to defending their national title at the 2017 U SPORTS championships, February 24-26, in Sherbrooke, Que.
