Male Athlete of the Week – Todd Winder (Uxbridge, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Guelph Gryphons
By his high standards, Guelph’s Todd Winder had a relatively quiet regular season. But the reigning OUA West Rookie of the Year has a penchant for producing when the stakes are highest, which he proved once again in the Gryphons opening round games against rival Windsor.
The former member of the OJHL’s Newmarket Hurricanes lifted Guelph on home ice last Thursday night, scoring twice in the second period to help erase an early 2-0 deficit. Winder grabbed an assist on a late, third-period equalizer and then capped an already-special night in style. The score was tied 4-4 midway through the extra session and moments after attempting a spin move on Lancers’ goalie Jonathan Reinhart, Winder saw a loose puck near the crease and poked it in for his third of the night in a thrilling Game 1 win.
The teams met two days later in Windsor and Winder, who scored five times in three games in their 2018 OUA West quarterfinal series, again notched the decisive goal, this time just 21 seconds into the first period. He added an assist for another multi-point effort in a 4-0 victory that put the team into the OUA West semifinals. The two-game span brought Winder’s career playoff stats up to a shocking 10 goals and six assists in just seven games played, adding to his growing legacy as a clutch playoff performer.
