OUA welcomes Brent Garbutt as Manager of Sport

BURLINGTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to welcome Brent Garbutt to the team as the organization’s new Manager of Sport.

“I am honoured to be joining the OUA and to have the opportunity to service its 20 member institutions so as to be the preeminent university sport conference in Canada,” said Brent.  “The OUA has proven to be a progressive organization in developing student-athletes in both facets and I look forward to contributing to their continued growth and success.  I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work under Gord Grace’s leadership along with his staff and am very excited to get started in January."

Brent will join the OUA as of January 3, 2018, and will do so with a background steeped in sport, specifically hockey. Brent will bring six years of experience in amateur sport operations, including several spent with the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). Within his time at the OJHL, Brent rose the ranks from Manager of Hockey Administration to Director of Hockey Operations, where he, among other tasks, managed key elements such as player transactions, scheduling, statistics, and finances.

Brent also has experience working with the NHL Hockey Operations Department, helping to oversee the quality control of live games to ensure they are being played within the rules. This role has also included assisting on-ice officials through the Coaches’ Challenge process and monitoring scoring plays.

The Laurentian University graduate also served two stints as the Director of Hockey Operations for Team Canada East at the 2014 and 2016 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge, where he oversaw and managed all coaches, staff, scouts and players. Rounding out his hockey experience, Brent has also worked as an Amateur Scout in the GTA and worked in the East Coast Hockey League as Manager of Hockey Operations.

Said OUA CEO Gord Grace, “Brent will bring a keen hockey background to the table, but will also be a key figure across the OUA sport landscape; something we are looking forward to as an organization. We are confident that Brent will be an important figure in helping the OUA to elevate the sport experience for our student-athletes.”

From hockey and beyond, the OUA is excited to have Brent join the team and lend his expertise moving forward.
