GUELPH, Ont. – The first round of games at the OUA Women’s Lacrosse Championships, hosted by the University of Guelph are complete and the semifinal games have been determined.
The Guelph Gryphons have booked a ticket to the semifinals after hammering the UOIT Ridgebacks 18-0 in Friday morning’s quarter final game. The Gryphons will now face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. The Varsity Blues earned their way to the semifinals defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 9-8 in their quarter-finals.
The first seeded Western Mustangs earned a bye through the first round and will face the Queens Gaels following the Gaels 14-8 quarterfinal victory over McMaster.
Quarter Final 1: The Queens Gaels defeated the McMaster Marauders 14-8. The two teams were tied 2-2 in the early first half before the Gaels went on a scoring spree. The Gaels were led by Teresa Mayo who scored three goals and three assists. Meanwhile Gwyneth Ross tallied three goals and one assist. Attack Jackqueline Byers was named the player of the game following a two goal effort. McMaster’s player of the game was Kyra Reilly, who scored a pair of goals.
Quarter Final 2: In the second quarter final the Gryphons led from start to finish over the Ridgebacks with a 18-0 final score. The Gryphons were led in scoring by Jade Sullivan who dominated the scoresheet with five goals and three assists. Staci Morris was named player of the game for her four goal effort. UOIT’s goalie Tessa Lam was their player of the game.
Quarter Final 3: The Toronto Varsity Blues were ahead after the first half 7-2 before Laurier built momentum and made a comeback. Laurier scored six consecutive goals in the second half before running out of time to make the final score 9-8. Leading the Varsity Blues in scoring was Taryn Grieder with three goals and one assist. Goalie Shayna Moor was Varsity Blues player of the game. Laurier’s Ashley Rutz led the team and was named player of the game following a three goal and one assist effort.
All games are played at the University of Guelph Gryphon Sports Complex.
