Football Players of the Week – September 30th, 2017

Offense: Johnny Augustine, Guelph Gryphons

Gryphons’ fifth year running back Johnny Augustine provided the heroics on Saturday in a wild, 53-49 Gryphons victory over the Waterloo Warriors.

Augustine, who finished the day with 107 all-purpose yards of offence (91 rushing, 16 receiving), scored the game-winning touchdown on a 22-yard run with just 0:22 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter to complete the Gryphons comeback.

The Sociology major finished matched a career-high by scoring three touchdowns on the day, the last of which capped an explosive 27-point 4th quarter for the Gryphs. Guelph found themselves trailing by 20 points in the 3rd quarter, but back-to-back touchdowns from Augustine changed the score from 32-12 to 32-26, with the pair of Augustine TD's coming just 0:36 seconds apart.

Defense: Jackson Bennett, Ottawa Gee Gees

In what was a back and forth Panda Game that came right down to the wire, Ottawa’s Jackson Bennett proved to be a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball all game long in front of the 24,420 fans.

Despite his team’s 33-30 2OT loss, Bennett stymied the Ravens offense on several occasions, en route to a team-leading 7.5 tackles, which included an assisted tackle for a loss. Not only that, but Bennett also made his presence felt when it mattered most, breaking up a pair of passes in the end zone to keep the Ravens’ touchdown hopes at bay, while also recording an interception on the day.

To cap off his impressive outing, the Gee Gees standout also returned four kickoffs for a total of 88 yards.

Special Teams: Quinton Soares, Carleton Ravens

Third-year receiver Quinton Soares made a big impact in Carleton's 33-30 Panda Game victory over uOttawa on Saturday, September 30. Soares was Carleton's special teams MVP in the team's biggest win of the season, providing the Ravens with excellent returns throughout the game.

Soares' top moment in the game, however, came on his 84-punt return for TD to open the game's scoring in the first quarter. Soares set single-game career highs in kick return yardage (91) as well as punt return yardage (143).
