Gaels three-peat as OUA Women's Fencing champions

LONDON, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels claimed the OUA Women's Fencing banner on Sunday afternoon at Thames Hall, finishing the weekend with a total of five medals and 294 points.

The banner is the Gaels' third in a row, making them the first team to accomplish that feat since RMC did so from 2005-08. RMC finished in second place with 289 points, while the host Western Mustangs finished in third with 227.

The Gaels followed up their strong showing on Saturday with another on Sunday, picking up two team medals to go with their three individual podium finishes from the day before. Two of those medals were gold, with one coming in the individual Foil event and the other in team Foil.

Mailys Rouganne and Jessie Pollett finished one-two in the individual foil event for Queen's while Lily Jiang had the Gaels other individual medal, battling to Sabre silver behind Western's Marie Lecoq. Jian was also part of the Sabre team that claimed silver along with Frencesca Pang, Sara Stonehouse, and Tina Zhang while Rouganne and Pollett teamed up with Kyra Dorfman and Nicole Turner to win Foil gold.

RMC's second place finish was aided by three team medals and two individual. The Paladins' individual medals came from Cecily McDonnell and Adolina Gawne, who picked up Epee silver and Sabre bronze, respectively. Gawne, along with Julie Cho, Alexandra Horeczy, and Mary-Anne Iver, helped RMC's Sabre Team take home bronze. RMC also took silver in both Team Epee and Team Foil.

Western rounded out the top three schools with two gold medals and a bronze. Lecoq had the Mustangs' only individual medal of the Championship—a gold medal in Sabre. She was also part of Western's gold-medal winning Sabre team alongside Jenny Du, Daphane Huang, and Vivian Poon. Poon also helped Western bring home bronze in the Team Foil event.

York's Jason Monroe was awarded the OUA's Christian Vidosa Trophy as Coach of the Year.
