BROCK'S HARPWOOD STONES FOURTH-RANKED UQTR

TROIS RIVIÈRES - The Brock University men's hockey team (6-4-2-0 OUA) knocked off the fourth-ranked ranked University of Quebec de Trois Rivières by the score of 2-1 Friday night. The Badgers were outshot 57-13 in the contest but with some great goaltending from Welland, ON native Matt Harpwood (pictured), and timely goals, ther were able to pull out a victory. This was the Badgers first win over UQTR since 1994 under former head coach Mike Pelino.

The first period saw UQTR score just over a minute in, when Nicolas Pelletier (Quebec City, PQ) fired a shot to the back of the net to give the Patriotes an early 1-0 lead.

UQTR continued to take the play to the Badgers for the remainder of the period, aided by a few 5-on-3s. However, the Badgers held them off, despite getting outshot 15-4 in the period.

In the second period, UQTR continued to pour it on, outshooting the Badgers 21-5 in the period. However, the Patriotes lost their one goal lead. Thorold’s own J.J. Martin snapped a wrist shot over the glove hand of UQTR goaltender Dany Dallaire (St-Narcisse, PQ) to even the score at 1-1.

UQTR came on even stronger in the third period but Harpwood continued to make a number of spectacular saves including 21 in the final period.

Then, with just 1:38 to go in the contest, Jason Harshaw (Grimsby, ON) redirected the puck past Dallaire to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead, which they would hold onto for the victory.

This was UQTR’s first home loss all season and after allowing his first shot of the game by him, Harpwood stood on his head, recording a career high 56 consecutive saves in the victory.
