WESTERN BLANKS UQTR FOR QUEEN'S CUP TITLE

The Western Mustangs won the Queen's Cup Saturday night - the trophy awarded to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's hockey champions - by blanking the visiting Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres Patriotes 4-0.

Fourth-year netminder Mike D'Alessandro stopped 38 shots to earn the shutout.

Western's leading scorer Mike Rice, a second-year forward, potted a goal 14 seconds into the contest to give the Mustangs an early lead that proved to be the eventual winner.

Fourth-year forward Ryan Held and second-year defenceman Chris Eade also scored in the first period. Eade also picked up an assist on Held goal.First-year forward Craig Kennedy netted a shorthanded goal in the second frame to round out the Western scoring.

Goalie Dany Dallaire recorded the loss for UQTR after allowing four goals on 42 shots.

As a result of playing in the OUA final, both the Mustangs and the Patriotes qualify for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship next week at The University of Alberta.

The Mustangs last lifted the Queen's Cup in 1994-95 - their only other OUA men's hockey championship.
