OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: LAURIER EARNS 10TH WIN AGAINST UOIT

OSHAWA, Ont. - Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) scored two special teams goals to lead the No. 7 nationally-ranked Wilfrid Laurier men's hockey team (10-2-1) over the UOIT Ridgebacks (2-7-2) 6-4 at the Campus Ice Centre.

The Golden Hawks got off to a slow start against the Ridgebacks who lost to the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 in overtime the previous evening. Laurier only managed to put up nine shots on net in the first, while UOIT fired 12 at Hawk netminder Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.). Neither team managed to score leaving both teams tied at zeros going into the break.

Laurier caught fire in the second period scoring four goals within a five minute span. The first marker came from defenceman Chad Kennedy (Mississauga, Ont.), with assists going to Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Colin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.).

The purple and gold continued to put pressure on the Ridgebacks' defence and just 43 seconds later freshman Brock Shultz (Waterloo, Ont.) would score his first of the season to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) would score with the man-advantage, while J.M. Rizk would notch his 10th of the season shorthanded to end the Golden Hawks scoring in the period. Laurier out shot the home team 21-7 in the period.

The final frame saw the Ridgebacks make a desperate drive to the finish line. The Golden Hawks scored two more goals from Jedd Borrows (London, Ont.) and another from Rizk. Borrows goal would stand up as the game winner.

UOIT stormed back in the period, scoring four straight goals in the final 10 minutes. Jonathon Koch-Butterworth (Uxbridge, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Ridgebacks with an unassisted marker and broke the shutout bid by MacDougald at the 13-minute mark. Two minutes later, Paul Pascuzzi (Whitby, Ont.) scored the home team's second goal on the power play. Koch-Butterworth scored his third goal of the season and second of the game a minute after that to set the Hawks on their heels. The purple and gold held on and allowed one more goal in the final minute of the game from Ryan Spencer (Woodville, Ont.).

Ridgeback goalie Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) faced 45 shots and made 39 saves in the game, while MacDougald saw 33 and stopped 29 for the win.

Laurier was two for seven with the man-advantage, while UOIT went one for five.
