Ravens finish 2016-17 season at Canadian College and University Nordic Championships

CANMORE, AB — The Carleton Ravens Nordic ski team completed its historic season at the Canadian Colleges and Universities Nordic Championships in Canmore, Alberta from March 18-22.

Hosted at the Canmore Nordic Ski Club, select representatives from the Ravens competed against the top college and university Nordic skiers from across the country.

Standout individual performances from women's team member Zoë Williams (Cantley, QC) and men's competitor Aidan Kirkham (Kanata, ON) inspired strong team results from the Carleton contingent in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

The Ravens men's team completed the event in second-place overall with 388 points behind the University of Laval's dominating final score of 656 points. Carleton's women's team captured fourth overall with 314 points, which was just behind third-place Alberta (326) and second-place Laval (370). Lakehead was the overall champion on the women's side with 525 points.

Saturday, March 18
Day 1 – Relay Cross

Women

The Ravens entered two teams in the opening day of nationals, as Carleton 1 featuring Maggie McClure (Halifax, NS) and Megan Evans (Revelstoke, BC) placed fourth (13:52.6), while Carleton 2 teammates Shelby Howard (Kanata, ON) and Emily Jones (Huntsville, ON) came in sixth (14:16.5).

Men

Carleton 1's tandem of Chris Weller (Chelsea, QC) and Carrington Pomeroy (Chelsea, QC) finished in third place (11:10.2) behind Laval and Lakehead, and Carleton 2's duo of Colin Ward (Mahone Bay, NS) and Brendon Howard (Kanata, ON) crossed the finish line 11 seconds behind their teammates to finish in fifth.

Sunday, March 19
Day 2 – Short Interval Free

Women – 5km (2 x 2.5km)

Carleton's top OUA Championships performer, Zoë Williams, ushered in her nationals with a bronze medal showing in the short interval free race with a time of 14:13.2. Megan Evans was a top-ten finisher as she completed her race in seventh place in a time of 14:49.7.

Men – 10km (3 x 3.3km)

Also earning a podium finish on the day was Ravens rookie Aidan Kirkham, who captured a bronze medal (25:17.0) in his first race of the competition. The other Ravens' top-ten finisher was Carrington Pomeroy, who placed fifth out of 36 CCUNC racers.

Tuesday, March 21
Day 4 – Medium Interval Classic

Women – 10km (3 x 3.3km)

In a blanket finish, Zoë Williams crossed the line in sixth (32:58.5) behind winner Frédérique Vézina (30:43.6), while Megan Evans had the second best individual time for a Raven with an 11th-place showing (33:34.7).

Men – 15km (4 x 3.75km)

Aidan Kirkham continued to add to his medal tally with a silver in the medium interval classic on Day 4. The OUA All-Star finished his four-lap race in 50:10.3, which was 0:43 seconds behind gold medalist Étienne Hébert (49:29.9). Carrington Pomeroy ended his day in 11th in a time of 54:51.3.

Wednesday, March 22
Day 5 – Long Sprint Classic Heats

Women – 1.3 km

In the final race of the competition, Zoë Williams had another strong showing as she collected a seventh-place finish out of 26 CCUNC sprinters with a time of 3:49.58, while Maggie McClure placed 14th (4:08.84) and Emily Jones came in 16th (4:12.80).

Men – 1.3 km

Ravens veteran Carrington Pomeroy led the way for the Ravens' competitors by grabbing sixth overall (3:23.78), followed by Colin Ward in 11th  (3:32.08) and Chris Weller just behind in 13th (3:33.18).
