Guelph Gryphons Hire Chantique Payne as New Head Swimming Coach

GUELPH - The University of Guelph has named Chantique Payne head swimming coach, announced Thursday. One of the most accomplished female swimmers in recent Gryphon history, Payne has been a member of the team's coaching staff for the past two varsity seasons.

"It is with great enthusiasm that I get to make this announcement of Chantique as our head coach of the varsity swim program," said Director of Athletics Scott McRoberts. "She is a bright young coach that has already garnered the respect of our student-athletes and front office staff.

Under the continued mentorship of Kendra Burton as assistant coach, we feel we have the best formula in place to continue to challenge at a National level. With the growth that Chantique has demonstrated over the last few years, the sky is the limit where both she, and the team will go."

As a swimmer, Payne was a four-year OUA All-Star and earned an impressive total of 11 OUA medals, and eight CIS medals. She is a seven-time OUA Gold medalist and in 2009-10 swam to a national title and First Team All-Canadian status in the 50m Butterfly.

In 2011 her career culminated in an impressive four national medals at the CIS Championships including a silver in the women's 50m butterfly, bronze in the 100m butterfly and a pair of bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle Chantique at 2010-11 OUA Championships in Guelphraces. During her collegiate career, Payne set one OUA record in the 100m Butterfly in her fourth-year and holds three all-time Gryphon swimming records in the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle events. She also earned two bronze medals at the 2012 Summer Canadian Championships.

After swimming Payne turned her attention to coaching, and started as a full-time assistant coach with the Gryphons program during the 2015-16 season. In the last two years she has focused on growing her coaching career, learning all-facets of the program but specifically taking a lead on the dryland planning and implementation. She has also earned invaluable experience as the National Team Coach for the Canadian Lifesaving team this past year.

In the classroom, Payne obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 2012 from the University of Guelph.

"It's an honour to be named the head coach of my alma mater and such a bright program," said Payne."I've been completely invested in Gryphon swimming since I came here in 2007 to pursue my academic and university swimming career. I want to thank the Department of Athletics for giving me this opportunity. This is a great program that has continually turned out strong OUA performances and standout athletes. I'm looking forward to the future success I believe we can achieve."

Payne has also been coaching with the local Guelph Marlins Swim club for the past six years sharing her knowledge of swimming and competitive lifesaving. She has done an excellent job of combining her work with the Marlins and Gryphon varsity team.

"With the announcement the partnership between the Guelph Gryphons and Marlins will continue to flourish for years to come developing competitive swimmers at all levels and abilities," commented McRoberts.
