TORONTO, ON - After a strong first half of the season in which they posted a 5-2 record, good for a share of top spot in the OUA Central Division, the Gryphons Women's Basketball team continued to look sharp during the Christmas break by picking up a pair of wins in exhibition play at the U of T Holiday Invitational.
Monday, Dec. 28: Gryphons 67 - Laurier 61 BOX SCORE
Tuesday, Dec. 29: Gryphons 77 - Laurentian 58 BOX SCORE
On Monday (December 28) the Gryphons earned a 67-61 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks thanks to strong performances from a pair of fifth year seniors. Kate MacTavish racked up 19 points and 12 rebounds while teammate Dana Van Balkom finished with 14 points. It marked the first meeting of the 2015-16 season for the Gryphons and Golden Hawks who are scheduled to face each other just once during the regular season with Guelph t (raveling to Waterloo on Friday, February 12.
On Tuesday (December 29) the Gryphons picked up a convincing 77-58 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs, with MacTavish once again leading the way in scoring with 17 points. Head coach Christin Dickenson reflected on the two exhibition victories by saying, "our vets were consistent and we rebounded well both games. We were able to get everybody some floor time and we're happy with our effort here during the break. Now it's time to gear up for a tough New Year opener against Western (Saturday, Jan. 9) to kick off our second half."
Note: The six team "tournament" featured Guelph, Victoria, Laurentian, Western, Laurier and Toronto. Each team played two games, with the exception of Victoria and U of T who played three. There was no tournament champion nor was there a tournament all-star team selected.
