Toronto’s Albert honoured as U SPORTS Female Athlete of the Month

TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Madeline Albert of the Toronto Varsity Blues and Dan Hayfield from the StFX X-Men are the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the Month for October 2017.

Albert, a rookie goaltender from Whitby, Ont., registered back-to-back shutouts and a trio of wins, en route to .977 save-percentage in the month of October. Through the three games, the first-year player managed to stop 84 of 86 shots against, including turning aside 51 straight shots in one weekend, leading the Varsity Blues to 7-0 and 2-0 victories over York and Laurier. 

Hayfield, a third-year striker from Exeter, U.K.., recorded a point in each of the five games played in October, highlighted by a two-goal, one-assist performance in a 4-0 victory on Oct.21 against the Mount Allison Mounties. Recently honoured as the U SPORTS men’s soccer Player of the Year, Hayfield went on to record seven points over the five-game span.

U SPORTS launched the Athlete of the Month award for the 2016-17 season to give outstanding athletes larger recognition for their passion, accomplishments and dedication to sport. From the winners of the U SPORTS Athletes of the Week in a given month, U SPORTS chooses one male and one female male athlete for the monthly title.

The period for October 2017 Athletes of Month runs Monday, Oct.2 - Sunday, Oct. 29.

Oct. 9 - 15: Phil Vranic, swimming, Guelph

Oct. 16 - 22: Dan Hayfield, soccer, StFX (winner)

Oct. 23 - 29: Mambi Diawara, basketball, Calgary

 

Female nominees:

Oct. 2 - 8: Hailey Lavarias, soccer, Manitoba

Oct. 9 - 15: Meggie Dargis, cross country, McGill

Oct. 16 - 22: Madeline Albert, hockey, Toronto (winner)

Oct. 23 - 29: Savanna Jordan, cross country, Dalhousie
