WILFRID LAURIER CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT OUA CROWN
After at tentative opening five minutes, the Golden Hawks carried much of the play in the first period, but both teams were kept to the perimeter with neither goaltender being tested.
U of T came to life early in the second stanza, and for the first time in the game had the Golden Hawks on their heels. The momentum was short-lived however. With Laurier pressing, Varsity Blues defender Mary Modeste (Oshawa, Ont.) was forced to haul down Golden Hawk in front, resulting in power play opportunity that gave Laurier their first score. A knuckler from the point off of the stick of Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, Ont.) fluttered through a maze of blue and gold and was tipped home under the arm of Lisa Robertson (Oakville, Ont.) by Laurier winger Laurissa Kenworthy (Newmarket, Ont.).
Three minutes later, the Golden Hawks doubled their advantage shorthanded. Candice Djukic (Binbrook, Ont.) intercepted a U of T clearing attempt and fired a wrist shot past Robertson's outstretched glove hand. Jessica Singh (Ottawa, Ont.) iced the victory for Laurier at the 10-minute mark of the third period.
The Golden Hawks out-shot the Varsity Blues by a slim 26-24 margin. OUA Player of the Year Cindy Eadie (Brantford, Ont.) collected her second straight shutout of the weekend and twelfth of the 2004-05 campaign.
Kenworthy, who scored the game-winning goal for Laurier, and U of T's Emily Patry (Calgary, Alb.) were named the Sherwood Hockey players of the game.
The second straight OUA title for Laurier was also their third the past four seasons.
The Golden Hawks also earn the conference's lone berth in the 2005 CIS Women's Hockey Championship that starts Thursday and runs from March 10 to 13 at Montreal's McGill University.
