Smith, Dinkins named OUA Athletes of the Week

BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 1st, 2016.
FEMALE: Stefanie Smith (London, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Windsor Lancers – Track
Windsor Lancers distance specialist Stefanie Smith (London, Ont.) continued her dominance on the track this weekend, winning both the women’s 1500m and 3000m events at the McGill Team Challenge.
Smith, a third-year human kinetics major, crossed the line in the 1500m in a time of 4:23.50, not only breaking the Lancers’ team mark, but also establishing a new meet record in the process.
The London, Ont. native also captured a gold medal in the women's 3000m with a time of 9:30.50.
This is the third consecutive week that the 5-foot-7 runner has broken a Windsor record. Two weeks ago she set a new standard in the 3000m and last week it was the mile record that fell.
Smith and the Lancers return to action this weekend as the team travels to Akron, Ohio for the Akron Invitational.
MALE: Bacarius Dinkins (Jonesville, Florida) – 4th yr – Lakehead Thunderwolves – Basketball
Bacarius Dinkins (Jonesville, Florida) had himself a monster series as the Lakehead Thunderwolves upset the No. 4 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders twice over the weekend.
On Friday night, the fourth-year general arts student-athlete, had a game high 27 points and 15 rebounds as the Thunderwolves defeated the visiting Marauders 73-67.
Dinkins, a 6-foot-6, 220 lbs power forward, was back at it on Saturday, recording a game high 19 points, six rebounds and four assists as Lakehead completed the weekend sweep of McMaster with a 74-72 victory. With the game hanging in the balance late in the fourth, the Jonesville, Florida native scored 11 of the Thunderwolves 25 points in the frame, including five points inside of two minutes to go in the game.
The Thunderwolves return to action on Friday night when they travel to Toronto, Ont. to take on the York Lions at the Tait MacKenzie Gymnasium.
