McMASTER MARAUDERS ANNOUNCE DINO PERRI AS NEW HEAD COACH OF MEN'S SOCCER
McMaster University has its 'keeper after going through the interview process to find a new men's soccer coach. He's Dino Perri, a former goalkeeper in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
A 39-year-old Mount Hope resident, Perri joins the Mac staff in a part-time position. He plans to keep his job as a physical education teacher and soccer coach at St. Thomas More Secondary School.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge," Perri said during a media conference at the David Braley Athletic Centre.
Perri takes over the head coaching reins from Tom Casey, who guided the Marauders since 1991. Four months ago, it was announced the four-time Ontario University Athletics coach of the year had accepted the position of director of community relations for both the Mac men's and women's soccer teams.
Mac won three national medals under Casey. However, the maroon and grey have struggled in the past four seasons, going 11-27-10.
Perri is an ex-Ontario University Athletics player. He was a two-time league all-star in his five seasons with the Brock Badgers.
"It's a little more serious now," Perri said of the changes that have taken place at the university level. "Expectations are higher from when I went. There's more year-round commitment for players."
Perri's background at the high school level is impressive. For the past eight years, his St. Thomas More Knights have qualified for the Hamilton Catholic league championship, winning five.
"The two seasons (high school and university) are at different times of the year," Perri said. "It works out well from the recruiting aspect, too. I get to see a lot of players."
A graduate of Cardinal Newman High School, Perri was a member of Ontario U-18 and U-16 national gold medal-winning teams. He went to Holland three times on playing tours and was a substitute player for a game when AC Milan came to Canada.
He suited up at the semi-pro level for 16 years with the Hamilton Steelers and St. Catharines Roma. Perri also coached the St. Catharines club, leading it to league, Cup and playoff titles in his rookie season.
"I want to bring professionalism to the entire program. The key is establish consistency year after year. We want to be one of the top teams in Ontario and in Canada," he said.
