First week of October tabbed as ‘Ontario University Athletics Week’ in the province
Burlington, Ont. – With the unanimous passing of the Private Member’s Bill, Bill 22, the first full week of October in each year has officially been proclaimed as ‘Ontario University Athletics Week’.
“The entire OUA community is thrilled to see university athletics celebrated and showcased in such a unique and meaningful way,” said OUA President & CEO Gord Grace. “On behalf of the OUA, I want to thank MPP Brian Saunderson for championing Bill 22 and the important contributions of student-athletes and coaches across Ontario.”
Bill 22 was introduced and presented by Saunderson earlier this year and was recently passed by the Legislative Assembly.
Saunderson himself is a former student-athlete in Ontario, having rowed for the Western Mustangs before going on to compete at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Summer Games. As a result, the MPP for Simcoe-Grey is no stranger to the varsity experience nor the distinct and diverse impact it can have on an individual, a community, or the province as a whole.
“This initiative, which honours both athletic excellence and academic achievement, strongly reflects the values of the OUA,” added Grace, “and the balanced pursuit of success that defines our student-athletes”.
With Bill 22 being passed, Ontario becomes the first jurisdiction in Canada to declare a week of recognition and celebration for university athletes each year.
“By providing this first-of-its-kind platform for the OUA and its Members to recognize the student-athletes who exemplify an unwavering commitment to their sport, their studies, and their communities, the province of Ontario is acknowledging the integral role of university sport in shaping future leaders and contributors to our society.”
