Choi, Drover-Mattinen, Hsu named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Winnie Choi, Liam Drover-Mattinen, and Ryan Hsu have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending October 13th, 2024.
Winnie Choi, Toronto, Tennis
Choi led the Varsity Blues to their second consecutive OUA gold medal, and fourth in five years, spearheading the charge in a 7-0 championship final win over McMaster this past weekend.
The Blues veteran was named championship MVP and an OUA all-star after leading Toronto as the No. 1 player in their quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship final matches, including a sensational come-from-behind singles win (2-6, 6-3, 10-4) in the gold medal round.
Liam Drover-Mattinen, Western, Tennis
Drover-Mattinen led the Mustangs men’s tennis team to the gold medal at the OUA Championships this past weekend.
In the No. 1 spot for the Mustangs, he secured the doubles point and won his singles match (6-3, 6-3) in the 4-2 gold medal win over Toronto. The rookie from Portugal Cove, N.L. further helped the Mustangs throughout the rest of the tournament as well, with wins over Ottawa (4-3) and Waterloo (7-0).
Drover-Mattinen was named both championship MVP and rookie of the year and picked up an OUA all-star honour for his performance.
Ryan Hsu, Toronto, Baseball
Starting at second base for the Varsity Blues during their run at the OUA championship this past weekend.
Hsu tallied a total of five hits, while registering six RBIs and three runs in two big back-to-back wins to secure a second consecutive OUA provincial championship. The commerce major was especially effective in the championship final where he accounted for seven of the 15 runs. He finished with six RBIs and one run scored in Toronto’s 15-5 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.
