Male: Spencer Pommells (Grande Prairie, AB) – 4th yr. – Windsor - Hockey
The leading scorer during the CIS regular season continued his strong play in the playoffs as the Windsor Lancers advanced to the OUA West Division finals for the fourth consecutive year.
The Lancers swept their best-of-3 second-round matchup with the Lakehead Thunderwolves thanks in large part to Pommells performance.
In the series opener on Feb. 25, Pommells recorded the rare natural hat-trick in Windsor’s crucial 4-3 road win and followed it up with another three-point performance in the series-clinching win in Game 2.
Back in Windsor for Game 2 on Feb. 28, Pommells scored a goal and added two assists in the Lancers 6-3 victory, sending them through to face the Guelph Gryphons in a best-of-3 series with a spot in the OUA Queen’s Cup on the line.
Pommells is currently third overall in OUA postseason scoring with 10 points in five games.
Female: Kelsey Valentine (Woodstock, Ont.) –
2nd yr. – Queen's – Figure Skating
It was a very successful week at the OUA Figure Skating Championships for Valentine, who came home with three gold medals and one silver medal at the event in Guelph.
Individually, Valentine finished atop the podium in the Open Solo Dance, and was joined by her teammates in the Dance Four, turning in another gold medal-winning performance. She would receive her first silver medal of the weekend in the STARSkate Gold Creative Dance, before closing out the weekend by winning a gold medal with her Gaels teammates in the Synchro routine, the final event of the tournament.
As a team, the Gaels finished in fifth place, missing out on a third-place finish by just four points. The Western Mustangs finished first in the overall standings, winning the OUA title for the fourth time in five years.
