MCMASTER HONOURS ITS TOP ATHLETES
HAMILTON, Ont. - At a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, McMaster University announced that the Female Athlete of the Year Award first awarded in 1984-85 would be renamed the Thérèse Quigley Female Athlete of the Year Award in honour of McMaster Director, Thérèse Quigley.
Quigley served McMaster University for 24 years and held the position of Director of Athletics and Recreation for the past 18 years. Quigley will take on the position of Director of Sports and Recreation Services at the University of Western Ontario this summer.
The first recipients of the Thérèse Quigley Female Athlete of the Year Award are volleyball setter Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, Ont.) and middle distance and cross country runner Jillian Wyman (Dundas, Ont.).
Holt was named a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) First Team All-Canadian. She becomes McMaster's first women's volleyball player to be named to the CIS first team.
Wyman captured the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) gold medal in the 1,000 metres earning OUA First Team All-Star honours. She also held the distinction of running the fastest time in the CIS this season. Wyman was also named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian in cross country.
The winners of the Ivor Wynne Trophy for the Male Athlete of the year are rugby forward Keegan Selby (Lindsay, Ont.) and wrestler Dusan Milakara (Toronto, Ont.).
Selby led the McMaster rugby team to a fifth championship in seven seasons. He was named the OUA West Most valuable player in 2008-2009.
Milakara earned a CIS silver medal in the men's 72 kg weight class, and achieved CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours.
The Dr. Edna Guest Award presented to the female graduating student-athlete that "radiates the spirit of McMaster" was awarded to Nora Griffiths (Burlington, Ont.) from the McMaster rowing team.
The Dr. Ray Johnson Award presented to the male graduating student-athlete was awarded to Simon Binder (Almonte, Ont.) from the men's football team and Peter Hrkal (Caledon, Ont.) from the volleyball team.
The Mel and Marilyn Hawkrigg Outstanding Sportsmanship Award were presented to Alexander "Simba" Sithole (Toronto, Ont.) of the men's rugby team and swimmer Stephanie Sun (Toronto, Ont.).
The Bruce Cochrane Award for service to a team was presented to Marie-Pier Picard (St. Catharines, Ont.), the manager and trainer for the McMaster Wrestling team.
The Les Prince Award for community service (individual) was presented to Cathy Conlin (Ailsa Craig, Ont.).
The Joyce Wignall Award for community service (team) was presented to the women's rugby team.
