Dave Smart to take Leave of Absence from Carleton for 2015-16 season

Carleton University confirmed today that Dave Smart, head coach of the varsity men's basketball team, has been granted a professional development leave of absence for the 2015-2016 season.

Carleton supports the request in recognition of the incredible hard work and success that Dave has committed to the university and the athletic department.

Dave feels this is an optimal time to spend time with his young family.  As well, he will continue his professional development, including his role as Assistant Coach of the Senior Men's National Team.

Dave recently helped guide the Canadian Senior Men's National Team to their best-ever Pan Am finish by earning a silver medal at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

Dave will turn his attention to the 2015 FIBA Americas tournament in Mexico City from August 31st to September 12th. A top two finish will guarantee the Senior Men's National Team an automatic birth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

During this period, assistant coach Rob Smart will serve as interim head coach for the 2015-16 season.

"The university recognizes the significant contributions Dave has made to the athletic department and the leadership role he has played in the outstanding success of the Carleton men's basketball team, achieving a record 11 national championship titles in 13 seasons," said Jennifer Brenning, Director of Athletics.  "Dave raised the bar for Ravens athletics' and has led the way by developing highly successful student-athletes, many of whom have gone on to playing careers in Europe.   We are pleased to support Dave with his request and are encouraged that Rob has agreed to serve as interim coach, providing a smooth transition as the Ravens prepare for another successful season."
