Guelph Gryphons @ Western Mustangs
The No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs men's soccer team imposed their will on Guelph Sunday afternoon beating them 3-0 at TD Waterhouse Stadium. Andrew Murdoch recorded his seventh shutout of the year and Niko Mavrikos scored twice for Western with John Morrissey adding the third goal.
The Mustangs remain undefeated on the season at 8-0-1. They were ranked third in the nation before their wins against McMaster and Guelph this weekend. Mavrikos is leading the OUA and CIS with 11 goals on the season.
Western got its best scoring chance of the half on a corner kick after an Eric Amato free kick was barely tipped high of the net by Guelph goalkeeper Bryndon Fry. The Gryphons failed to clear the ball from the box and Alex Lewis blasted a shot off the left post.
Guelph had their best chance late in the first half. Off a free kick, the ball was shot twice through the box with no Western or Guelph player able to get a piece of it. The ball eventually went out of bounds off of Guelph.
Western came out quickly to start the second half and pushed the ball into Guelph's end. Lewis dropped a perfect pass to Mavrikos, who buried the shot into the back left of the net. This gave Western the 1-0 advantage just one minute into the second half (46th minute).
Murdoch of Burlington, Ont., made two excellent saves in the 58th minute to keep Guelph off the scoresheet. Guelph's Arthur Berlin shot from just outside the box to the left and Murdoch could not corral the shot. He then had to make a save on Drew Gowan's shot off the rebound.
Mavrikos got his second goal of the game in the 65th minute after Guelph failed to clear a corner kick and Mavrikos collected the ball in the box and blasted it past the keeper to make it 2-0.
Murdoch made another great save in the 79th minute off a strike from Guelph's Brandon Springer to keep the Gryphons off the board for good.
With Guelph trying to put a goal on the board, Western caught them on the odd-man advantage and Morrissey made a nice move cutting back to the middle and blasted the third goal of the game past Fry.
Brock Badgers, York Lions @ Laurier Golden Hawks
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks played two games this weekend picking up a win and a tie increasing their record to 4-2-2 and into a tie for fourth place in the OUA west.
Saturday, the team played an excellent game against the Brock Badgers earning a victory with a score of 3-0 and Sunday, their second game of the weekend they tied against the York Lions with no scores on the board.
Against Brock (2-4) the team played a very aggressive and physical game. Laurier had more shots on net and the game was played mostly in the offensive end. The scorers of the game were Ben Clifford (Milton, Ont.), Spencer Cawker (Mississauga, Ont.) and Sandro Stojakovic (Waterloo, Ont.). Laurier’s goalkeeper Jarrett Humphreys (Waterloo, Ont.) made four saves on route to earning his third shutout of the year.
Sunday the Hawks played against a rested York Lions (4-2) team who had not competed the previous day. Both teams appeared to be equally matched and the score reflected this as no goals were scored, resulting in the tie at zeros.
Waterloo Warriors @ UOIT Ridgebacks, Brock Badgers
First year keeper, Rob McMillian (Newburgh, Ont.) posted his second and third shutouts of the season blanking the UOIT Ridgebacks 1-0 on Friday night in Oshawa and soundly defeating the Brock Badgers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Waterloo. With the two wins the Warriors catapulted themselves into second place in the OUA west men’s soccer division, one point ahead of Laurier and McMaster.
Rookie Prescott Goldsworthy of Waterloo scored his first goal of the season in extra time to give the Warriors a hard fought victory over the Ridgebacks. The Warriors controlled much of the game when they finally found their legs after spending 3.5 hours on a bus which broke down on their way to Oshawa.
On Sunday afternoon, the Warriors continued their hot streak putting three goals past Badgers keeper Ryan Toale (Brampton, Ont.). Second year forward Sohyb Basir (Waterloo, Ont.) opened the scoring in just the 13th minute, his third marker of the season. Two minutes later kinesiology student Billy Bean (Waterloo, Ont.) would also add his third of the year to put the Warriors ahead 2-0. Victor Salajan (Kitchener, Ont.) came in as a substitution to score his first of the year and secure the victory for the black and gold.
Guelph Gryphons, McMaster Marauders @ Windsor Lancers
Dan Mendonca earned his fifth regular season shutout this past weekend with a pair of 0-0 draws against the Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders in OUA men’s soccer action.
Windsor is now 1-2-5 on the season, and sits 6th overall in the OUA West division.
The Lancers gained some early momentum on Saturday afternoon against Guelph.
Windsor’s Chris Lanni rung a shot off of the goal post just minutes into the game, while midfielder Mike Watson broke through the Guelph defence halfway through the first half and also hit the cross bar to keep the game tied at zero.
Guelph applied heavy pressure in the second half, registering five shots on Mendonca.
Windsor’s Ryan Wise and Guelph’s Drew Gowan led their respective teams with two shots on net apiece.
Mendonca made six saves in net for Windsor.
On Sunday against MAC, both teams showed signs of strong possession, but neither was able to get on the board, even though there were a number of shots registered.
Watson had the best chance to earn the win for Windsor breaking through the Marauder defence and finding himself one on one with McMaster keeper Matthew Grant. Unfortunately, like the day before, Watson beat the goaltender but again hit the cross bar.
The second half turned physical with five yellow cards being passed out between the two teams.
The Marauders had their best chances to take the lead in the second half, but also hit the cross bar on two occasions to keep the score deadlocked.
Mendonca was busy in net for Windsor making eight saves for his third straight shut-out and fifth overall on the year.
Carleton Ravens @ Toronto Varsity Blues
The Carleton University Ravens men’s soccer team handed the University of Toronto Varsity Blues their first loss of the season as they came away with a 1-0 victory on the road Saturday afternoon.
Neither team was able to score in the first half, but in the 72nd minute, Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) beat Blues goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) to give Carleton the 1-0 lead.
The Ravens defended well for the rest of the match and held on for the 1-0 victory. Keeper Karl Wasslen (Ottawa) earned his fourth straight shutout. The men’s team has not allowed a goal in 360 minutes this season.
With the victory, the Ravens improve to 4-0-0, just two points behind the Blues for second place in the OUA East. However, Carleton has three games in hand.
Laurentian Voyageurs @ Queen’s Gaels
Mike Arnold of London, Ont., had two first half goals to lead the Gaels to a 3-1 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs at Richardson Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Gaels first goal didn't come until late in the first half when Arnold was able to put one in the bottom left corner from the top of the 18-yard box. In the final minutes of the half, Arnold was able to put another one through from a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box making the score 2-0 for the Gaels at halftime.
The Gaels widened the gap early in the second half when Andrew Colosimo of Thunder Bay, Ont., put a hard kick into the bottom corner of the Voyageurs' net.
The Voyageurs attempted to make a comeback when Dieri Drame of Sudbury, Ont., was able to arc one over the Gaels' keeper. The Gaels were able to hold the Voyageurs back, however, and the final score was a 3-1 win for the Gaels.
The Gaels now have a three game win streak, and the win improves the Gaels record to 4-2-1.
