Banner Season: Star-studded lineups headline all-GTA battle for Blackwood Cup

Burlington, Ont. – It is an all-GTA matchup to close out the 2025 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men’s soccer campaign, and while the Toronto Varsity Blues and York Lions are familiar with success on the pitch, both will be hungry to add to their program totals by claiming another Blackwood Cup on Saturday.

2025 OUA Men’s Soccer Championship Details

Both teams will be eyeing a win against their crosstown rival when they take the Varsity Stadium pitch, and as the teams compete in opposite divisions through the regular season, this championship clash will mark the first time these two star-studded rosters will see the other this year.

Toronto enters the conference finale with five all-stars donning the blue and white, while York boasts an OUA-best six such accolades, including player of the year Christian Zeppieri.

The now three-time OUA West Division MVP, who became the first such player to accomplish that feat after adding the 2025 accolade to his resume, notched eight goals during the regular season and added another in his team’s quarterfinal win over McMaster.

Another of the Lions’ six all-stars this season, Anthony Morano, is also looking to make his mark in what will be his banner season debut. The striker from Woodbridge, Ont. burst onto the OUA scene after spending the 2024 campaign with the Rutgers. He led the Lions with nine goals, which also ranked him tied for second in the conference, netting his first tally in his York debut on August 28 and highlighting his season with a hat trick against Western on September 29.

Another offensive contribution in the final would go a long way to punctuate an already triumphant foray into the OUA, but it won’t come easy against the Varsity Blues, who will turn to their leadership group, among others, to help guide them to their OUA-best 51st men’s soccer title.

“We have a really good leadership group this season,” said head coach Ilya Orlov. “Each week, we are able to do our review, analyze the game, correct what needs to be corrected, scout the opponent, and then play our game.”

The internal belief that they can best any team they face on the pitch will go a long way against the Lions, a team that has now made the championship game for the past three seasons and are eager for a win in their third straight appearance. And among those epitomizing that confident outlook is third-year midfielder Mehdi Essoussi.

The electrical and computer engineering student from Ottawa, Ont. is a key part of the Blues leadership team and is one of the conference’s best when it comes to controlling the middle of the pitch. Essoussi, now a two-time OUA all-star and a 2025 CPL-U SPORTS draftee (10th overall by Vancouver FC), also chipped in with a pair of goals and an assist on the year and will be called upon for another impactful performance against the Lions.

It's not all about the veterans; however, as Toronto will also turn to first-year standout Jordan Grey to continue the sizzling start to his varsity tenure. Appearing in 12 regular season games for the Blues, the OUA East Division rookie of the year tallied six goals and was a key fixture in the OUA’s highest-scoring offence.

That offensive acumen helped the championship hosts pace the league with 42 regular season markers and another six in their two postseason victories over Ontario Tech (4-2 quarterfinal win) and Waterloo (2-0 semifinal win), respectively. And while the Blues were able to hold their opponents off the scoresheet on eight occasions this year, they managed to find the back of the net in each of their 2025 matches en route to their first place finish overall.

Right behind them was a similarly successful York squad, who finished second in league scoring with 29 goals, while matching Toronto’s stinginess with just eight goals allowed as well. The Lions haven’t dropped a decision since their second game of the year, riding an unbeaten streak of nine games into the postseason before taking down the Marauders 3-2 in the quarterfinals and edging the Carleton Ravens via penalties in the semis.

The visitors will look to ride that momentum into their first title since 2018, and while it will be familiar territory for York, they will enter the matchup with some unfinished business on their minds. Toronto, meanwhile, have already surpassed their result from a year ago, but adding another conference win to their 2025 total would earn them their first Blackwood Cup in 15 years.

And while both sides will come in prepared, confident, and hungry for victory, only one of these Toronto-based squads can take home the title to close out their provincial campaign.
