Badgers honour late high school rower Emily Brettell at Brock Invitational Regatta

A strong tailwind in addition to a quick current made for very fast times, with some first place finishes nearing World Best Times. Racing wasn't the only thing on the mind of competitors today, as the life of E.L. Crossley and South Niagara Rowing Club member Emily Brettell.
Emily passed suddenly August. Emily Brettell was an incredible athlete and a fierce competitor. Her positive attitude and work ethic made her the heart and soul of every crew she rowed with. She loved rowing, and the rowing community. Emily was a two-time gold medalist at the CSSRA Regatta, and a two-time Stotesbury Cup Regatta gold medalist. Strength, determination and tenacity defined Emily.
Claiming gold for the Badgers was Matt Finley in the Heavyweight Men's 1x (who finished four seconds back of the World's Best Time) Taylor Ashwood in the Lightweight Men 1x, Luke Gadsdon and Ryan Malcowski in the Men's 2-, and Mackenzie Boyes, Jacob Thomas, Iain Pierce, Nick Heffernan, Finley, Gadsdon, Alex Rogers, Zak Lewis, and Malcowski.
Other crews finishing on the podium were the Novice Women's 4+, Lightweight Women's 2x, Heavyweight Men's 2x, and the Lightweight Men's 4+. Winning bronze was the Novice Women's 8+, the Women's 2-, a second Men's 2-, the Lightweight Women's 8+, the Heavyweight Women's 4+, and Lightweight Women's 2-.
The Badgers are back in action two weeks from now at the OUA Championship hosted at Henley Island.
