Toronto's Chetrat earns CIS athlete of the week nod
Chetrat, a fifth-year economics student from Oakville, Ont., also captured five gold medals last weekend and earned male-MVP honours after he guided the Varsity Blues to the men’s team title at the OUA championships in St. Catharines, Ont. The senior national team member, who represented Canada at last summer’s FINA world championships, swept all three individual butterfly events, setting a new conference mark in the 100m race (53.35), and led the Blues to victory in the 4x200 free and 4x100 medley relays, including an OUA record-tying time in the 4x200 free (7:23.84). The five-time OUA all-star and four-time all-Canadian hopes to help the Toronto men defend their CIS team banner next week in their own Varsity Pool.
Swimmers David Sharpe of Dalhousie and Frédéric Le Blanc of Montreal as well as Alberta volleyball player Jay Olmstead were the other male nominees.
Jardin, a first-year arts and science student from Montreal, was named female athlete of the year and rookie of the year after she claimed five gold medals in as many events and led the Carabins women to the team banner at the RSEQ championships in Sherbrooke, Que. The 2012 Olympian set a conference record in the 400-metre freestyle (4:08.81), registered the fastest time in the country this season in the 400 medley (4:37.02) and added victories in the 200 free (1:58.64) as well as the 4x200 free and 4x100 medley relays. Thanks to her time of 1:58.18 as the first swimmer in the 4x200 free relay, Jardin is also ranked number one in the nation in that individual event going into next week’s CIS championships at the University of Toronto (Feb. 20-22).
