Lancers capture Team Challenge
This weekend, the Lancer track & field team hosted the 26th annual Team Challenge at the St. Denis Centre and once again, the nationally ranked Lancers had an outstanding weekend of performances.
The Lancers captured both the men's and women's titles defeating the York Lions, the defending CIS men's champions, and the Guelph Gryphons, the defending national women's champs.
Windsor also captured a record 32 medals at the competition, surpassing last year's record breaking total of 29, including 12 gold, 13 silver, and seven bronze.
On the women's side of the competition Sarah Swain qualified for the CIS national championships in the women's 60m hurdles with a gold medal time of 8.52 seconds.
Sierra Wolfe placed first in the women's 600m with a time of 1:39.37, while Stefanie Smith continued her standout season with a gold medal in the 1500m (4:33.05).
Smith also captured a gold medal as a member of the women's 4x800m relay team with Alexandra Moore, Lindsay Thompson, and Meaghan Marton. Marton also captured a silver medal in the 1500m with a time of 4:34.42.
Other gold medals for the women included Jasmin Kerr in the pentathlon with 3,009 points and Emily Omahen in the long jump with 5.56m.
On the men's side, the Lancers were led by Matt Travaglini with two gold medals. Travaglini placed first in the men's 3000m with a time of 8:24.77, and helped the men's 4x800m to a gold medal with teammates Jordan Collison, Paul LaMarra, and Taylor McArthur.
Alex Ullman qualified for nationals in the 1000m with a time of 2:24.35, while Arren Young also had a qualifying performance of 7.30m in the men's long jump.
Other gold medalists included Chris Waugh in the pole vault with a height of 4.75m, and Angelo Bortolin in the triple jump with a leap of 14.42m.

Warriors excel at Windsor Team Challenge
The Warriors travelled to the University of Windsor this past weekend to compete at the 26th annual Team Challenge. The track & field team came out with some very strong results, including 13 lifetime personal bests and 6 results cracking the UW All Time Top 10 list.
Starting off the meet was the 60m dash, where Kelsi Darmon (Fergus), Tegan Sauer (Kitchener) and Sian Smart (Kingston) fought each other right to the finish line. Smart came out on top for the Warrior women with a new lifetime personal best of 7.88, while Sauer and Darmon ran times of 7.93 and 7.96 respectively. Smart advanced to the final where she further cut down her time to 7.86, which placed her 4th overall and #8 on the UW All Time list.
In between her two impressive 60m runs, Smart soared to a new lifetime personal best of 5.47m in women's long jump. This earned her yet another spot on the UW All Time list at #4 as well as placing 4th overall. On the other side of the field, rookie Amanda Tubman (Renfew) continued to improve in women's weight throw with a new lifetime personal best of 11.65m. This earned her a respectable #4 spot on the UW All Time list.
Veteran Naomi Lance (Kitchener) had another superb result in the 300m dash, running a time of 40.52 and finishing 6th overall against a very strong field. Lance is currently ranked 9th in the CIS for the event. On the men's side, Samuel Martinello destroyed his previous personal best with a new time of 36.20 and finished 7th overall.
Rookie Rachel Bronzovich (Oakville) continued to dominate in the women's 600m, running a notable time of 1:40.18 and capturing the bronze medal. Also in the event, rookie Sabrina Marsh (Sault Ste. Marie) ran a massive lifetime personal best time of 1:42.98.
Leading the way for the distance crew was rookie James Milton (Kitchener) in the men's 3000m crossing the finish line in a time of 8:34.86, a new lifetime personal best by 14 seconds. This earned Milton a bronze medal finish and the #6 spot on the UW All Time list.
The women's 4x200m team was looking to improve their time and secure their spot at the CIS Championships next month. Running a seasons best time of 1:44.25 they move up in the ranking and currently sit 12th in the CIS. Rookie Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) ran a very impressive split time of 25.8 out of the blocks while Naomi Lance (Kitchener) blazed around the track in a new personal best time of 25.2. This split time sets Lance at #4 on the UW All Time list.
To finish off the meet, the women's 4x400m team ran a new season's best time of 4:04.25. Naomi Lance (Kitchener)'s season's best split time of 58.2 was the fastest of the team.
Next week, the Warriors will be splitting up looking to secure their tickets to the CIS Championships competing at the University of Guelph, the University of Toronto, and Cornell University.

Mustangs impress ahead of OUA Championships
The Western Mustangs travelled to Windsor this past weekend to compete in the Windsor Team Challenge, where the women's team placed second overall while the men's team placed third, with both team's earning nine medals a piece. Other members of the team competed at the Spire Division I invitational in Ohio with a number of personal bests and Top 20 finishes being recorded.
Once again Robin Bone took home a gold medal in the pole vault event, with her 4.36m result not only meeting CIS standard but also setting both a meet and CIS record. In the 60m hurdles, Western took up two spots on the podium with Shaylyn Kowalchuk (8.73s) and Joy Spear Chief-Morris (8.76s) taking home silver and bronze medals, respectively. Bone would finish just short of the podium in fourth with a time of 8.80s. Rachael Muma took home bronze in the 300m with a time of 40.30s, with Sarah Clancy (40.42s) and Jen Barbon (40.46) placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 4 x 200m, Western's Team 'A' , comprised of Spear Chief-Morris, Barbon, Clancy, and Muma, brought home silver with a CIS standard time of 1:40.00. Team 'B' – made up of Liz Barbon, Caroline Ehrhardt, Lauren Clancy, and Cassandra Pascal – placed sixth with a time of 1:44.33. Lauren Thomas and Kowalchuk both had top eight finishes in the long jump, with a 5.30m and 5.20m jump for sixth and eighth place, respectively. In the triple jump, Ehrhardt brought home another gold medal for the Mustangs after a jump of 12.84m – a CIS standard jump which also set a new meet record. Kristen Gibson and Fatou Bangoura would both place in the top eight with jumps of 10.93m and 10.72m, respectively.
Western earned two medals in the high jump, with Emilia Grala taking silver with a 1.70m height while Kaleigh Hole took bronze with a jump of 1.65m. Devyn McKenzie (1.60m) and Kowalchuk (1.55m) both made top eight. Kristen Bujnowski would add another medal to the Mustangs count, claiming bronze in the pentathlon with 3007 points. Brindley Jatnzi placed sixth in the weight throw with a 15.57m throw, while Brooke Hoxar took sixth in shot put with a result of 12.65m. Finally, in the 60m dash Ehrhardt and Pascal took fifth and sixth place, with times of 7.78s and 7.89s, respectively.
The men's team would see nine individuals take home medals at the event. In the 60m hurdles Izzy Ogieva took gold with a CIS standard time of 7.95m. Ogieva, along with Riley Bell, Chris Cauley, and Robbie Gallaugher would take silver in the 4 x 200m relay with a time of 1:29.37, also meeting CIS standard. In the 60m dash Bell would finish in eighth with a time of 7.02s. In the 600m dash, Evan Porter claimed bronze with a time of 1:23.97. The Mustangs took home silver in the 4 x 400m after Chris Robertson, Robbie Deeks, Mac Campbell, and Travis More ran a time of 3:30.38.
In the long jump the Mustangs claimed two spots on the podium, with Gallaugher taking silver with a CIS standard 7.24m jump and Bell claiming third with a 7.07m result. Bell would earn silver in the triple jump after a 14.35m result, with Sanjeev Vijayakumar (13.93m), Payam Saboni (13/56m), Daniel Gayle (13/21m), and Madalitso Mchaina (13.10m) taking the fourth through seventh place spots. The high jump event saw four Mustangs record top-eight finishes, with Ogieva and Adam Devon tied for fourth after both jumping 1.95m, and Saboni and Roberston both jumping 1.85m.
Brian Choja would add another medal for the purple and white after a 4.55m result in the pole vault, while teammate Eric Cowan took fifth with 4.30m. Finally, in the pentathlon it was gold for the Mustangs as Cauley earned 3589 points to take first place, with Michael Paisley (3252) and Robertson (2789) in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
At the Spire Division I Invitational in Geneva, Ohio a number of Mustangs saw themselves set personal bests along with numerous individuals making Top 20 finishes. In the 600m Katie Bell (1:33.36) took 10th, while Genny Cyrenne (1:34.11) placed 14th with a personal best and Stephanie Truelove's personal best (1:35.33) saw her place 15th. Melissa Caruso took 10th in the 1000m with a time of 2:51.15. In the mile event, Amanda Truelove rounded out the Top 20 with a time of 4:53.53, while Bridget Pyke did the same in the 3000m with a personal record of 9:45.43. Triphon Moodie took 12th in the men's 1000m with a time of 2:29.58 and placed 13th in the 800m with a result of 1:51.80.
A number of personal bests were set in Ohio this past weekend, including Cyrenne's in the women's 400m (58.57s) and Ben Carson in the 600m (1:24.87). In the 800m event, five Mustangs set personal bests including Caruso (2:14.54), Kristina Popadich (2:17.23) and Stephanie Truelove (2:18.17) for the women, and Carson (1:56.90) and Shane Roberts (1:58.44) for the men. Popadich would set another best in the 1000m with a time of 2:57.63, while Roberts (2:31.61), Lewis Kent (2:32.49), and Andrew McColl (2:33.50) all saw personal bests in the men's 1000m.
Up next, about one third of the Mustangs will compete at the Guelph Last Chance meet on February 20 and 21, while the majority of the team will take time off to prepare for the upcoming OUA Championships. The OUA Championships, which will be hosted by York, will run February 27 and 28.

Lions finish second and thid at Windsor Team Challenge
The York University track & field team posted big results over the weekend (Feb. 13-14) en route to the men's team capturing silver and the women taking home bronze at the Windsor Team Challenge.
The biggest result of the weekend was Brittany Crew's (East York, Ont.) throw in the shot put of 15.15m and Khamica Bingham's (Brmapton, Ont.) 60m run of 7.34 seconds, which earned them both golds and set new meet records. Crew also took home the bronze in the weight throw with a 17.07m toss.
Not too far behind Bingham was Sheereen Harris (Toronto), who grabbed the bronze in the 60m with a 7.75 second run. In the 300m, Christy Ihumaegbo (East York, Ont.) ran a 40.26, which was good for silver.
The women also stood atop the podium in both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays. The 4x200m relay team of Bingham, Harris, Danielle Knight (Brampton, Ont.) and Mikeisha Bobb (London, Ont.) ran a 1:39.79, which qualifies them for the CIS nationals. The 4x400m relay team who ran 3:55.98 consisted of Harris, Ihumaegbo, Bobb and Meira Dholakia (Richmond Hill, Ont.).
On the men's side, the Lions swept the 60m dash with Ike Omoruna (Brampton, Ont.) taking home gold running 6.94 seconds, and Xavier Jehovah (Toronto) and Dereck Djan (Toronto) rounding out the top three.
Also claiming gold were Jameel Brown (Brampton, Ont.) in the 300m with 35.19 seconds, Eric Brathwaite (Brampton, Ont.) in the shot put with a 16.92m throw and Chris Preece (Cookstown, Ont.) in the weight throw with a 17.17m toss.
In the triple jump, Richard Jansen (Bradford, Ont.) found the podium in third place with a leap of 14.24m and Justin Massar (Anten Mills, Ont.) finished fourth in the pentathlon with 3342 points.
In the relays, the men swept the 4x200m and 4x400m races. Brown, Jehovah, Ayo Agusto (Toronto) and Jalen Pidlubny (Scarborough, Ont.) ran a 1:29.12 in the 4x200m and Agusto, Pidlubny, Brown and Bismark Boateng (Toronto) ran a 3:23.70 second race in the 4x400m. The team of Matt Fouzie (Kingston, Ont.), Jordan Miller (Toronto), Brandon Belan (Espanola, Ont.) and Suraj Sharma (Brampton, Ont.) ran 8:07.99 seconds in the 4x800m to claim the bronze.
Members of the Lions will participate in the Hal Brown Last Chance meet at the University of Toronto next weekend.

Gryphons soar at Windsor Open
The Gryphons had athletes in action at the Windsor Team Challenge this weekend. The results were highlighted by huge vertical jumps performances. Sean Cate won the men's high jump 2.12 metres, moving him to the top of the CIS rankings and narrowly missing the school record. Maja Naruscewicz won the women's high jump in 1.73 metres a mark that ranks her third in the CIS. In the women's pole vault Alison Fung and Samantha Allegro both cleared 3.77 moving them up into a tie for fourth nationally. Rounding out the Gryphons' season best performances was Ashley Connell's 14.46 mark in the shot put, ranking her third in the CIS.
