CIS schools & Shoot For The Cure initiative raise over $125,000 to fight breast cancer
QUEBEC CITY (CIS) - The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association proudly announced Sunday the organization had raised $102,312.05 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in 2014-15 thanks to the eighth edition of its annual Shoot For The Cure initiative.
QUEBEC CITY (CIS) - The CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association proudly announced Sunday the organization had raised $102,312.05 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in 2014-15 thanks to the eighth edition of its annual Shoot For The Cure initiative.
The impressive amount was unveiled at halftime of the championship final of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS Final 8 at Laval University. Scott Edwards, vice-president of the WBCA and head coach at the University of Alberta, presented a cheque to Mrs. Lyse Ferland, Chair of the 2015 championship organizing committee.
An additional $23,049.71 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local or provincial organizations, bringing this season's Shoot For The Cure overall total to $125,361.76 and the eight-year total to $886,670.88 since the initiative was launched in 2007-08 to raise awareness and money to fight the deadly disease.
For the fourth straight season, all 46 CIS women's hoops programs participated by holding one or numerous fundraising games or activities over the course of the campaign.
"It was another great year for the Shoot For The Cure initiative," said Jeff Speedy, Shoot For The Cure project manager, WBCA president and head coach at University of New Brunswick. "It marks the fourth year in a row that we have 100% participation from our teams across the country, which is great considering we seem to add new schools to CIS women's basketball every year. We are already looking ahead to 2015-16 where the goal will be to top the $1,000,000 mark in total money raised since the initiative was launched."
