W-RUGBY ROUNDUP: Gaels and Gryphons improve to 4-0
September 21 – Waterloo @ Toronto
The Varsity Blues women’s rugby team lost 28-10 in a hard-fought match against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, September 21 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, Waterloo (3-1) bounces back after a 47-0 loss to Guelph last week, while Toronto is now 1-3-0 and tied for fourth in the OUA Russell division.
All 13 of Toronto’s points were scored in the first half. The Blues opened the scoring with a try from Bailey Rudnick (Ottawa) 24 minutes into the game. However, Waterloo responded with a try from Sarah Jane Garland (New Hamburg, Ont.), one of her two of the game.
The Warriors went ahead; however, U of T’s Karla Telidetzki of Edmonton scored a second try near the end of the half to bring the game within three (13-10) at halftime.
Toronto’s defensive play helped keep the game close in the second half, stifling multiple attempts by Waterloo early on. However, a try by Briana Cunningham (Waterloo, Ont.), and two second half penalty kicks helped Waterloo extend their lead and secure the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 29 when they host the York Lions at Varsity centre. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Queen’s @ McMaster
Hamilton, Ont. - The No. 9 McMaster women's rugby team fell to the Queen's Gaels on Alumni field on Saturday afternoon. In their fourth game of the season, the Marauders were unable to stop the Gaels as they lost by a score of 32-5.
The first attempt to score came very early in the first half, but rookie Stephanie Black (Ottawa, Ont.) was unable to put the ball between the posts on the penalty.
It would take another 15 minutes before the Gael's got their first try of the match. Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) scored her first try, but Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) would miss the convert.
The Marauders would even up the score soon after. Former CIS Women's Rugby Rookie of the Year Cindy Nelles (Belleville, Ont.) would push through from a scrum to get the try for McMaster, but Black would be unable to make the convert.
From there, Gaels Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.) and McEwen would put up two more tries and Popov would score a convert down the pipe just before half to lead 17-5.
Ten minutes into the second half, Queen's would strike again with another try from McEwen to take a commanding 22-5 lead.
Later, with 15 minutes to go in the game, Nelles would strike again. Her second try of the game would give McMaster 10 points, but it would be the last time the Marauders would reach the scoreboard as Black's convert would hit the post.
Before the game was over, Queen's would put the nail in the coffin with two more tries, from Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) and Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, BC). The final score would be in favour of the Gaels 32-10.

Guelph @ Brock
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's rugby team (0-4 OUA) had a tough game at home Saturday afternoon losing 86-0 to the defending OUA and CIS Champions from Guelph.
The Gryphons, ranked 2nd in the CIS, continue to prove they are a top team in the country with a strong performance from players all across their lineup.
A quick start put Guelph up 17-0 in the first ten minutes of play with tries being scored by Caitlin Beaton (Clavering, Ont.), Dominique Monaghan (Markham, Ont.) and Mackenzie Higgs (Aurora, Ont.) respectively. Stephanie Tibelius (Ottawa, Ont.) was successful on the conversion.
The Badgers kept pushing and came close on a couple of occasions before the end of the half but it was the Gryphons who put together three more tries and two conversions to make it 36-0. Beaton added her second and final try of the game, while Emily Pitre (Toronto, Ont.) and Brittany Priddle (Badjeros, Ont.) got a try each before the end of the half. Tibelius would also add two more conversions.
In the second half, the Badgers could not muster up the punch needed to stop an overpowering Gryphon offense. It was an impressive half for Higgs, as she moved on to kick four conversions and added another try to give her a game high of 18 points. That total vaults her into second in overall scoring with 41 points. Her teammate, Britt Benn (Napanee, Ont.), is the OUA leader in scoring with 55 points after getting across the line for two tries late in the game.
The rest of the scoring came from single tries scored by Samantha Pepper (Turkey Point, Ont.), Caitlin McNally (Guelph, Ont.) and Shannon Spurrell (Haley Station, Ont.). Spurrell also scored the final conversion of the game to make the final 86-0.
The Badgers will next face off against the McMaster Marauders (2-2 OUA) on September 29 as a part of Brock's Homecoming. Game is scheduled to start at 3pm following the men's rugby game against Guelph at 1pm.
