W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Mustangs move into first place in West with 4-0 win over Windsor

ST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock University women's soccer team (4-8 OUA) bounced back form a rough weekend with a convincing 5-0 victory over the visiting side from McMaster (3-6-1 OUA) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Badgers did not wait long to score the first goal of the contest. In the 9th minute, rookie Shaniqua De Gannes found the back of the net with a long distance strike from 35 yards out. The home side was back on the attack in the 11th minute, when a wide ball from the midfield found striker Brooke Boekestyn alone on the right wing. Brooke was then able to fire a cross onto the foot of Megan Salisbury who finished the play by sliding the ball passed the McMaster goalkeeper Cristina Abbatangelo.
The home side was clearly in fine form on this day as they were able to add a third goal in the 26th minute. The goal was scored by Boekestyn who now has nine goals on the season, breaking the previous school record of eight goals in a single season.
As the first half was coming to an end, the Badgers Ja'mill Millar managed to sneak a shot underneath Abbatangelo's right arm to give the Badgers a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Marauders managed to create multiple goal scoring opportunites, but could not find a way to beat Brock starting goalie Jenna Vasiliaskas. Her clean sheet was in jeapordy in the 81st minute when McMaster midfielder Kelsey Orlando was taken down inside the 18 yard box and was awarded a penalty kick. Orlando fired a shot to the bottom right corner, but was denied by Vasiliaskas.
Brock forward Kelly Miller added a late goal in the 89th to make it 5-0 for the home side.
Vasiliaskas recorded nine saves for the victory, while McMaster's Abbatangelo collected two saves in the loss.

Queen's 1 @ Carleton 1
OTTAWA, Ont. (October 1, 2014) - Jessie de Boer (Vancouver) scored her fourth goal in three games by netting the Gaels only goal in their 1-1 draw with Carleton.
The first half of the match was dominated by solid defensive play from both squads, as the shots on goal totalled just two per side.
Vanessa Germano of Carleton opened the scoring in the 55th minute after burying a rebound past Gaels keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.). De Boer knotted the score in the 71st minute to extend her scoring streak to three games. After receiving a through ball from midfield, De Boer finished a quick give-and-go with Tara Bartram (Vancouver) on a sliding strike to the top right corner.
The match would end in a deadlock as neither team could bury the go-ahead goal. Tyrell registered four saves over the match while her Carleton counterpart, Elizabeth MacDougall, earned three.
The Gaels (5-2-3) return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-5-2).

Ryerson 1 @ Trent 0
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team earned its third win of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating the Trent Excalibur 1-0 in Peterborough.
Hanna Park (Markham, Ont.) scored her first of the season in the 60th minute to propel the Rams to the victory. Park scored on a rebound opportunity after midfielder Rebecca Arnott's (Whitby, Ont.) shot was turned away by Trent keeper Annalise Buchowski and left available near the goal.
Rams keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) recorded her first cleansheet of the season after making five saves.
"I thought we were strong and disciplined throughout," said head coach Kevin Souter following the match. "We had several chances to break the deadlock early but couldn't convert. On a different night it could have been more...(but) credit to the team for their work ethic, communication and focus to see out the 1-0 victory."
The win was the first by the team on the road in Peterborough since the 2011 season.
Ryerson runs their record to 3-6-0 on the season and moves ahead of Trent into seventh place in the OUA east standings, just two points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand. The Rams are back on the pitch this weekend when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens.

Western 4 @ Windsor 0
WINDSOR, Ont. – Lauren Winquist contributed a hat-trick on Wednesday evening as the Western Mustangs climbed to a 4-0 victory and first place in the division on the road against the Windsor Lancers.
Wednesday's victory increases the Mustangs winning streak to five games, and with only five games left in the season the purple and white will look to keep it going.
Despite heavy offensive pressure from the Mustangs in the first half, Lancers goalie Krystin Lawrence would stand strong in the net, blocking all Western shots that came her way. The Mustangs' defence would show that they were strong as well, not allowing Windsor to get any shots away in the first 45 minutes.
With the scoreboard sitting at 0-0 at the start of the second half, the Mustangs came ready to make the game theirs. Continuing their strong offensive attack, it finally paid off when Winquist buried a shot at the 56-minute mark. While the purple and white defence remaining strong, Western continued to battle up front, with Winquist adding two more goals at the 71 and 73-minute marks to put the score at 3-0. In the final minutes of the game, striker Amanda Boyle blasted a shot past Lawrence for her 18th goal of the season, to take sole possession of first place on the OUA and CIS leaderboards for goals this season.
The victory now puts Western in first place in the OUA West Division with a record of 10-1-0, while Windsor now sits at 6-4-0 on the season.
With only a few days to rest the Mustangs will now look to extend their winning streak when they host Brock on Sunday, October 5. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Mustangs Field.

Toronto 0 @ UOIT 2
OSHAWA, Ont. – The No. 9 ranked UOIT women's soccer team extended their undefeated streak to 10-games with a 2-0 shutout effort over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday night at Vaso's Field.
The Ridgebacks recorded their second straight shutout, as they improved to 8-0-2 and remain as the only undefeated team in the OUA. UOIT is now trailing the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees (9-1-0) by one point for the top spot in the OUA eastern conference standings.
Toronto proved to be a good test for the Ridgebacks as they entered the game with a 5-2-1 record, having won four of their last five games.
After a scoreless first half, Shynice Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) would open the scoring at the 48 minute mark, as she streaked in from outside the box and banked in a shot that went off the sprawling arms of the Toronto keeper and into the net. This was Williams' first career OUA goal.
A half hour later, the Ridgebacks would add an insurance marker when Jordan Thornton (Ajax, Ont.) headed in the ball off a crossing corner kick from Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.). The ball just crossed the line for Thornton's second goal in as many games.
Toronto would fire six shots on target, but UOIT goalkeeper Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) would stop them all as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Linton's shutout streak is now at 251 minutes. Toronto goalkeeper Sara Petrucci made 13 saves in the losing effort.
UOIT remains one of five teams across the country without a loss this season. The Ridgebacks will look to extend their unbeaten streak on Saturday when they head to Peterborough for a match against the Trent Excalibur (2-7-1). The match will be a part of the Head of the Trent festivities.
