Quest for the Cup: Experience, determination to be on display in semifinal showdowns
Burlington, Ont. (via AC Lang / wsoccer.ca) - The OUA women’s soccer season has reached the semifinals, with only four teams left in the running: the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Nipissing Lakers, Guelph Gryphons, and York Lions. After thrilling quarterfinal action mid-week, each team is just one win away from securing a spot in the OUA finale, as well as the national championship. Let’s review each team’s journey to the semis and highlight the key storylines ahead.
Guelph at Ottawa
The Gee-Gees defeated Toronto 2-1 thanks to a Nibo Dlamini brace. Ottawa was dominant from the start, going up early in the fifth minute, though they held the lead for just over 30 minutes. Toronto’s Hannah Chown buried a penalty to tie the game 10 minutes before half. Dlamini’s sensational free-kick goal in the 53rd minute is a must-see. Toronto’s attempt at a comeback fell short as Gee-Gee keeper Cassidy Joslin made a key stop late in the game to secure the win, advancing Ottawa to the next round in search of a third consecutive OUA title.
The Gee-Gees will be favorites when they face the Guelph Gryphons, who finished second in the West, at Matt Anthony Field (kickoff at noon). An Olivia Brown strike in the 88th minute broke the deadlock and lifted Guelph to a 1-0 win over McMaster. The victory was especially sweet for Guelph as it avenged last season’s quarterfinal loss to the Marauders and saw them reach the semifinal stage for the first time since 2017, the year they won their only OUA title.
Motivation will be high for both teams. The Gee-Gees will aim to assert their dominance at home, while the Gryphons, with nothing to lose, will need a near-perfect performance to advance. Guelph’s offensive core, featuring Brown, Rizakos, Gomes, Trepanier, and Chase, is as strong and deep as it’s ever been, though they’ve struggled defensively at times this season. The shutout against McMaster was only their third.
Ottawa, meanwhile, will look to exploit any defensive lapses, confident in their scoring prowess. They’ve only been held off the scoresheet once this season, racking up 45 goals with seven Gee-Gees netting more than three, making their offence unpredictable. Defensively, they’re just as solid, conceding only five goals all season, with players like Smith, Frangione, and Bouity forming an airtight unit.
York at Nipissing
If you missed the Nipissing vs. Queen’s quarterfinal on Wednesday, you missed one of the best OUA playoff matches in recent memory. A 6-4 final score in North Bay was celebrated jubilantly by the entire Lakers athletic community, and rightly so. Nipissing managed to erase a two-goal deficit in the second half and showed the resilience needed to finish the game off in overtime.
Jessica Emmerton had the game of her life, netting a hat-trick and adding an assist. Veterans Traicoff and Brooks each chipped in with a goal, and rookie midfielder Bella Nolte contributed with both an assist on the tying goal and a score of her own. The Lakers will go into their home match against the Lions confident in their ability to overcome adversity and score, though they’ll aim to lock down their defence in pursuit of a first-ever OUA title.
On the other hand, the York Lions are seeking their fifth OUA title, and that journey starts with a win in North Bay on Sunday afternoon. The Lions defeated Western 1-0 in the quarter-finals in a tense, defensive battle that extended to overtime. Third-year Sabrina Fabiano was the hero, scoring in the 100th minute to clinch the win. Things got heated afterward, with three yellow cards as York fought hard to hold onto their lead.
York’s veteran-heavy squad includes five players in at least their fifth year of eligibility, including midfielders Kalifornia Mitchell and Keira Kent, as well as defender Vanessa Breda. With goal scoring star Nia Fleming-Thompson back, their offence has received a much-needed boost. Her 12 goals rank second in the OUA and fifth nationally, and York will like their chances of returning to the final to avenge the painful loss to Ottawa in 2022.
This weekend’s semifinals promise intense action as each team vies for a spot in the OUA final. Ottawa and York bring experience, while Guelph and Nipissing bring determination. It’s set to be a thrilling showdown with everything on the line.
