OUA BY THE NUMBERS
2 – The number of penalty kicks Toronto goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) saved in the Blues’ OUA men’s soccer quarterfinal. Toronto converted four of their penalty kicks to claim victory and earn a berth in this year’s Final Four competition.
11 – The number of seconds separating Laurentian rower Carling Zeeman (Cambridge, Ont.) from the rest of her field in the women’s heavyweight singles final at the OUA rowing championship. Zeeman earned the gold medal and will compete in the CIS championship this weekend.
429 – The amount of passing yards Lancers quarterback Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) threw for in Windsor’s 50-33 OUA quarterfinal victory over Ottawa. He completed 25 of 34 passes and had five touchdown passes to lead the Lancers to their first postseason win since 2003. Kennedy was named OUA and CIS Football Player of the Week on offence.
12 – The number of times the Guelph Gryphons women’s rugby team has won the OUA championship after claiming the banner this past weekend. The first title was awarded in 1994, meaning the Gryphons have won all but six of the OUA championships. The Gryphons were named October’s Pizza Pizza OUA Female Team of the Month.
13 – The number of seconds Tamara Jewett (Toronto) finished ahead of the competition to claim the 2011 individual title at the women’s cross country championships. The Blues’ runner was named the OUA Pioneer Energy Female Athlete of the Week and CIS Athlete of the Week for her accomplishment and she has qualified for the CIS championship held November 12.
27 – The number of kills Waterloo’s Laura Klein earned in the Warriors’ 3-2 victory over Ryerson in women’s volleyball action. The Kitchener, Ont. native leads the nation in kills with 52 in four games.
3 – The number of goals Queen’s winger Cory Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) scored in a win against Toronto this weekend. Bureau had overtime magic on his side that day, as his hat trick goal was the game winner in the extra period.
36 – The number of points rookie Mike Turnbull (Oakville, Ont.) recorded for Western in a 96-7 victory in the final week of the men’s rugby regular season. The scrumhalf scored two tries and kicked 13 conversions in the game and finished second in league scoring with 61 points on the year.
7 – The number of consecutive years the Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s soccer team has appeared in the Final Four championship. This season they finished second in the east and posted a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals to send them to this year’s championship.
0 – The number of rushing touchdowns the Queen’s Gaels football team surrendered in the regular season. Their defence finished atop the league and helped propel the six game winning streak for the Gaels who started the season 0-2. The Gaels were named October’s Pizza Pizza OUA Male Team of the Month.
