OUA introduces 2025-26 student-athlete advisory committee
Burlington, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is thrilled to announce the formation of the 2025-26 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The OUA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was established to provide a collective voice for student-athletes, offering input on policies, activities, and decisions that impact the student-athlete experience.
“I care deeply about making sure student-athletes are supported as people, not just performers,” said Toronto soccer player Hannah Chown. “I’m motivated to be part of this committee because I believe in using our voices to advocate for real change.”
Joining Chown as members of 2025-26 SAAC and representing their schools therein are Windsor student Justin Gec, Lakehead volleyball player Alysha Goundry, Ottawa football player Ben Maracle, Waterloo hockey player Simon Rose, Wilfrid Laurier curler Logan Shaw, Western rower Clarissa Sladek, former McMaster student-athlete Habban Yohannes and Queen’s volleyball player Chris Zimmerman.
“The SAAC brings together a small group of current athletes and recent grads from across our schools to share what’s happening on the ground, so we can communicate better, strengthen inclusive practices, and shape solutions that reflect what athletes need,” said Chris Cobbina, OUA Manager of Student Experience and EDI.
“At the heart of our work is our 9,500 student-athletes,” said Gord Grace, OUA President & CEO, “and having them working closely with the OUA on this advisory committee will be of great value to the conference and our Members.”
As part of their responsibilities, the SAAC will aim to be a representation of the student-athlete voice in OUA discussions by creating meaningful connections and conversations between student-athletes, the OUA, and its Members.
“I know how powerful it can be to feel seen and supported,” added SAAC member Zimmerman. “Being part of this committee is a chance to advocate for equity and bring more voices to the table.”
Finished Cobbina, “We want this committee to be a space for honest dialogue that turns into practical recommendations for the conference and keeps our work transparent and responsive.”
