WATERLOO SWEEPS OUA CURLING CROWNS
TORONTO - On Sunday, the University of Waterloo Warriors captured both the men's and women's banners at the 2005 OUA Curling Championship at the East York Curling Club.
It was the first time the same university earned both titles in the same season in four years. The institution to last accomplish the feat was the University of Toronto in 2001, the hosts of the 2005 event.
However, both Waterloo teams grabbed the conference's top prize the hard way.
The Warriors men went 2-1 in round robin action and were forced to play in Sunday's semifinal after dropping their final game on Saturday to pool winner Queen's 7-0. In the semi Waterloo defeated Brock 5-2, before getting their revenge in the final with an 8-4 victory over the Golden Gaels.
In women's action, the Waterloo women went 1-2 and just slipped into Sunday morning semifinal, and they made the most of the opportunity. They earned one-point win over Queen's 9-8, and then doubled up on Western 6-3 in the final.
For the Waterloo women, it was their first OUA title since 2000, while the men grabbed their first title in nine years, last claiming the provincial crown in 1996.
