OUA AND THE SCORE ANNOUNCE UNIVERSITY RUSH SCHEDULE
Score anchor Tim Micallef returns to call games for his sixth season of University Rush football. The anchor of Score Tonight will again be joined by Duane Forde, who returns to the colour analyst position. Both personalities bring a wealth of experience to OUA football, and understand the passion and direction which is portrayed through their broadcasts.
"We are looking forward to once again bringing audiences some of the best university football in the country," said David Errington, The Score's SVP and General Manager. "We are also pleased to be broadcasting the Yates Cup in HD for the first time ever on The Score HD."
University Rush gets underway Saturday September 8, as head coach Greg Marshall, of the Western Mustangs, makes his return to Hamilton as the Marauders take on the Mustangs in second week OUA action. Marshall will be looking to set his mark early in the season in hopes of leading his team to the final on November 10th.
The Score travels to London the following week (September 15) for the inaugural game under the lights on University Rush, as Western will be looking to take a win at home against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Ottawa enters the 2007 season in an unusual position; that of defending Yates Cup champions. Ottawa won its first OUA title in 30 years last November before their eventual bowl loss to Saskatchewan. The Gee-Gees took a 17-3 win in the first week of football action last season against the Mustangs and will be looking for another victory led by 2006 Yates Cup MVP Joshua Sacobie.
September 22 features the University of Windsor home coming weekend which will see the Queen’s Golden Gaels battle the Lancers and 2006 Hec Crighton winner, running back Daryl Stephenson, under the lights at the University of Windsor Stadium. Stephenson who led the CIS in rushing with 1140 yards in 2006, is only 1100 yards away from becoming the CIS all-time leading rusher in just his fourth season with the Lancers.
Rivalries should draw attention to week five, as the Score travels back to London as the Windsor Lancers travel to take on the Mustangs on September 29th. The meeting between the two teams is always a hotly-contested battle. Last season Western took the win 28-18 at home over the visiting Lancer squad in the regular season, and again stole the victory as the Mustangs upset the Lancers at home in a quarter-final playoff match up 20-16. Windsor will be out for revenge after their early playoff departure last year.
Thanksgiving weekend will see the Gryphons hosting an eagerly anticipated game at home on October sixth, as the Laurier Golden Hawks make the short trek to Guelph. In 2006 the Gryphons took Laurier into overtime until the eventual Yates Cup finalists pulled away with a 24-17 victory. 2006 OUA leading passer Justin Dunk will be looking to have another standout year in hopes of leading the Gryphons back into the playoff hunt.
The premier match-up of week seven boasts a re-match of the Yates Cup final as Ottawa takes on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Kitchener/Waterloo. Laurier Head Coach Gary Jefferies will have a clear memory of his team’s 32-14 loss to the Gee-Gees in the 99th Yates Cup back on November 11, 2006, and will be looking to avenge that loss with a win. Prior to the 2006 season, Laurier had won the past three regular season match-ups against the Gee-Gees, and will battle to start a new winning streak against a dominating Ottawa team.
The Score will also broadcast a game in the final week of the regular season on October 20, with the two teams still to be determined. All five, week eight match-ups could have potential playoff implications as teams will look to finish strong. Playoff coverage will get underway October 27 with the quarterfinals followed by semi-final action the following week, culminating with the 100th Yates Cup Championship on November 10, presented by Pioneer Petroleums.
