WESTERN AND GUELPH TO PLAY FOR 100TH YATES CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
At Waterloo, Ont. the University of Guelph Gryphons upset the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 39-31 to advance to the 100th Yates Cup in front of a crowd of 3,219 at University Stadium.
The win for Guelph marks their first trip to the provincial final since 1996 when they defeated the Waterloo Warriors to advance to a national bowl game. Laurier however will miss the championship for the first time in five years.
Nick Fitzgibbon (Pusalinch, Ont.) scored four touchdowns including the game winner as the Gryphons ran off 31 straight points to take the victory from Laurier.
The Hawks opened the game with three consecutive scoring drives with touchdowns by Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) and two for Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.). Hawk rushing leader, Lynch carried 25 times for 135 yards by the end of the day.
Justin Dunk connected 12 of his 22 passes for 211 yards including several scrambling plays. He was the only other rusher for the Gryphons with 96 yards on the afternoon.
Hawk quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) opened the game 10-for-10 completions but had some trouble with an interception later in the game ending his day at 25 for 36 for 306 yards.
After narrowing a 14 point deficit with a Ryan Lynch touchdown, Luke Pinder (Kitchener, Ont.) picked up a fumble after a failed onside kick and gave Laurier good field position for an attempt to tie the game. Noble couldn't connect with intended receiver Andy Baechler (Ayr, Ont.) on the third down giving the ball to the Gryphons with 30 seconds on the clock.
The Gryphons will host the provincial title at Alumni Stadium in Guelph on November 10th. The game will be broadcast live on The Score television network.

At Ottawa, quarterback Michael Faulds found David Clayton for two second-half touchdowns as the No. 10 Western Mustangs shocked the No. 2 Gee-Gees with 23-16 comeback win in one OUA semifinal Saturday to advance to the Ontario championship.
Faulds found Clayton from 62 yards in the third quarter and from 45 yards with two minutes left in regulation before rookie linebacker John Surla fell on the ball off an Ottawa fumble off a missed field goal in end zone with no time left to seal with the win.
Clayton finished with 209 receiving yards on nine catches as Faulds was good on 17 of 35 passes for 318 yards.
The Mustangs, which began the season 0-4 for the first time in 40 years, won a sixth straight game, improving to 7-1 against the Gee-Gees in the playoffs since 1966.
Runningback Davie Mason had a 36-yard touchdown run for to finish the half with 12 carries for 115 yards for Ottawa as the Gee-Gees had a pair of interceptions off Faulds and overcame several dropped passes of their own to take a 16-4 lead at the break.
Gee-Gees quarterback Josh Sacobie finished with 18 completions in 42 attempts for 271 yards yards and two interceptions in the eighth playoff game of his four-year career, but hit several open receivers who flat-put dropped the ball to the dismay of 2,029 at Frank Clair Stadium.
Mason, who finished with 17 carries for 163 yards, was collared on his first rush of the third quarter, a 15-yard gain, limping off the field favouring his left side. He returned in the fourth quarter but limped off once more following a 16-yard gain.
Fifth-year uOttawa kicker Ara Tchobanian, the CIS regular season scoring leader with 106 points, clanked a 25-yard field goal attempt off the upright in the first quarter before hitting from 13, 24 and 38 yards in the second quarter of his last university game.
