M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Queen's, Carleton battling for first in OUA East
October 5 - Laurier @ McMaster
Despite a clear territorial advantage, the McMaster men’s soccer team could not find the net and had to settle for a 0-0 draw against the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks.
Chasing the York Lions for first place in the OUA West division, the Marauders were hoping to pick up three valuable points in the standings, while third-place Laurier wanted to gain ground on McMaster, which sits ahead in second spot. The Marauders entered play as the 6th-ranked team in the national top-ten.
It appeared the Marauders had taken the lead in the first half when Andrew Pastoric got his boot on a McMaster corner kick, but the offside flag went up in a close call that negated the goal.
In the second half, McMaster continued to carry the play and had some dangerous chances, but none better than a two-on-one break by Gersi Xhuti and Mark Reilly late in the game. Only a game-saving stop by Laurier keeper Brett Harrington on a shot from Xhuti kept the game scoreless. The Marauders pressed the attack right through stoppage time, but had to settle for the team’s first draw of the season.
McMaster now has a record of 8 wins, one loss, and one draw in 10 OUA games.

York @ Guelph
The York Lions scored in the 80th minute to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 Friday in men’s soccer action played at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.
The disappointing loss drops the Gryphons to 5-5-1 and keeps the Lions’ undefeated streak alive at 10-0-1.
The Gryphons came out determined to topple the No. 1 CIS squad by matching the Lions stride for stride. With a strong cross in the 13th minute to a wide open Mike Bijman (Brantford, Ont.), it seemed as though the Gryphons would be the ones to strike first. However, as the ball soared over the crossbar the home crowd quickly realized the Lions weren’t going down that easily.
Matters for the Gryphons’ defence slowly got worse as Jeremy Gaylor (Mississauga, Ont.) went down in the 20th minute. He would not return for the course of the game. Thankfully Paul Manchisi (Oakville, Ont.) and Justin Springer (Burlington, Ont.) were able to rally the defence around a steady stream of substitutes to fend off the Lions for the rest of the half.
A strong physical play by Jared Agyemang (Brampton, Ont.) tied the shot count up at two and thrust the momentum in Guelph’s favour going into the half.
Determined to crack the scoring stage, both teams were able to double their shots by the 70th minute mark but stellar performances by Chad Paparoni (Brampton, Ont.) and Sotiri Varlokostas in net kept the game tied at zero.
Merely ten minutes later would see the game’s first sign of defensive weakness as York’s Terence Linatoc was able to sneak past Chad Paparoni to tally the game winning goal. A free kick for Guelph in the 90th minute was too little too late as the toughened Lions defence held out the Gryphon strikers for the duration of extra time.

Windsor @ Western
The Western Mustangs won against the Windsor Lancers, 1-0 Friday. Windsor sits one spot ahead of Western in the regular season so this game tightened the OUA West standings and made the victory that much sweeter.
Out of the gate, Mustangs Nick Agam and Pat Mroczek breezed through the Lancers, exhibiting exquisite ball skills. The team integrated Vince Caminiti into the mix, but he didn’t quite get to the ball in time for a scoring opportunity.
It was a slippery game played in a London monsoon. Mustangs in white, the drenched players persevered. Eighteen minutes into the game the Windsor goalie fell prey to the slip and slide that was TD Waterhouse stadium and after a short intermission Lancer Goalie Sam Atkin came in. TD Waterhouse was just that, a water house.
At 24 minutes Western scored their first goal. Assisted by Vince Caminiti, Eric Amato was able to get a clear shot.
In addition to the TD slip and slide there was another addition to the field. Team captain Andrew Walton and Matt Elias donned the signature Dan Cameira look today, posh black gloves. Evidently, the award for team trendsetter goes to Cameira. He’s even got El Capitano following suit!
At the end of the first half Western led 1-0.
In unrelenting rain, the Mustangs picked up where they left off as the TD slip and slide turned into the TD kiddie pool, full of flaring tempers and tantrums directed at the referees.
Windsor Player Mike Watson received a yellow card after an unsavory tackle on Nick Agam. Ryan Kirk said, “Nick Agam showed great heart when he got up after a dangerous challenge at the 60 minute mark."
Luke Todd intimidated the Lancers forwards into staying out of the Western box. Todd was integral in tonight’s shut out.
At 72 minutes Windsor player Mike Watson received a red card for yet another aggressive tackle. At 81 minutes Windsor player Jack Sargent received a yellow card, which was followed by an immediate red for Brydon Caesar after he tackled Western’s Andrew Walton in one of the dirtiest tackles this season.
The game began appearing more and more aggressive as the rain fell and traction waned.
