M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Ryerson, Guelph, Toronto and Laurier move on to divisional semis
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams advanced to the second round of the OUA playoffs with a 2-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs Wednesday night at Esther Shiner Stadium.
The Rams advance to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year and avenge a 2009 postseason loss to the Voyageurs.
"It was exciting," Viktor Anastasov said. "We were expected to win so we came in serious and focused and the results came."
Ryerson struck first in the do-or-die game as Anastasov redirected a corner kick in the 17th minute past goalkeeper Matt George.
"I made a run, which I wasn't supposed to make," he said. "My run is usually to cover the goalie and not go for the ball, but I just felt it. I went for the ball and flicked it."
Laurentian was awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute after a handball in the Ryerson 18-yard box. It was a golden opportunity for the Voyageurs, who hadn't posed a serious scoring threat, to get back into the game. They sent up their best player, Davor Alisic, and after a tense buildup he aimed for the bottom right side.
Rams goalkeeper Christian Marlado guessed right, both figuratively and literally, and kept the Voyageurs at bay.
"That separates a good keeper from a great keeper," associate coach Filip Prostran said. "Having a good year is one thing, but stepping up when your team really needs you and when you're not expected to make the save, that's the difference."
Maraldo made five saves for the clean sheet. His counterpart, George, stopped nine of 11.
The visitors came out and pushed the pace in the second half, making Ryerson's one goal lead look vulnerable at times. The Rams picked themselves up and answered their challengers, reverting back to simpler, grittier soccer. As Prostran put it, they looked like piano carriers, not piano players.
"I was pretty nervous at some points during the game," Markus Molder said. "It was just about who wanted it more and in the end we just battled through it, got the second goal and from then on, they just gave up."
Milos Scepanovic, Ryerson's leading scorer, iced the game in the 81st minute, converting a cross before ripping off his shirt for the Rams faithful. He was issued a yellow card for his celebration.
With the win, the Rams will face the Carleton Ravens on Sunday afternoon. The Rams lost to the Ravens on opening night, their only loss, and played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 29. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Windsor 0 @ Guelph 2
Senior Robbie Murphy (Ottawa) scored two goals in the 103rd and 118th minute to lift the Guelph
Gryphons men’s soccer team to a 2-0 overtime victory against the Windsor Lancers in playoff action tonight in Windsor.
After two halves of scoreless soccer, the Gryphons were able to find the goal twice in extra time to record the victory and move on to the OUA quarter-finals. The number five seeded Gryphons will now play the number two seeded McMaster Marauders on Sunday in Hamilton.
In goal, senior Chad Paparoni (Burlington, Ont.) earned his third shutout in a row.
The first half remained evenly matched, though Windsor seemed to be having an advantage in the later end, with Lancer Christian Mayorga having many close encounters to a goal. Unable to succeed the score still remained 0-0.
The second half began much like the first, with both teams fighting for the first goal. Lancer’s again had many attempts yet none were able to get past Paparoni. The second half came to an end with a 0-0 tie, bringing the game into overtime.
Guelph’s Robbie Murphy, back from injury, scored both overtime goals for the Gryphons in the 103rd and 118th minute for the win.

Laurier 3 @ Western 2
Tonight marked an early season wrap for the Western Mustangs men’s soccer team at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
The home team was ousted from the OUA playoff field in shock tonight as close rivals Laurier Golden Hawks took the quarterfinal game 3-2 in a last minute decision. Laurier’s Robert Kardaras scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of the game to propel the Golden Hawks to the OUA semi-final on Sunday.
The Golden Hawks played the majority of the second half down a player after midfielder Don Chumura received a red card 12 minutes in. Following an intense backlash from the rest of the Golden Hawks squad for the tripping and unsportsmanlike call, play continued 11 on 10 in favour of the Mustangs.
Despite finishing the regular season on a high note, Mustang goalie Ivan Skoko had a shaky playoff game and made several uncommitted save attempts that left the ball in dangerous ground behind him. On two of Laurier’s goals, Skoko was stuck far out from the goal line and left the Mustangs’ defense scrambling for the ball.
The teams started at an even pace and shared ball possession in both ends. Western took back-to-back corner kicks four minutes in, just missing a deflection opportunity on the second attempt. Mustang Luke Todd followed up with an impressive run down the entire left wing, but his lone play was called offside before he could make a centering pass.
Thirty minutes in, Laurier forward Alejandro Diaz found the back of the Mustang net off an unanticipated pass, avoiding a defensive slide right in front of him. Diaz almost repeated the same play several moments later but just missed the left post on an accurate set up from the Laurier front line.
Approaching the final minutes of the first half, Western’s Eric Amato scored off a lengthy free kick, as the Laurier screen distracted the team’s own keeper Brett Harrington as well.
Pat Mroczek played right to the first half buzzer and got a shot through Harrington in the final minute, but the lucky Golden Hawk defense caught the ball before it trickled past the scoring line. The first half drew 1-1.
In the second, Chumura’s red card decision swung the momentum to the Mustangs. The half started with a two on one break for Western but Mroczek tripped and couldn’t deliver the play.
Dominic Bell followed up with an acrobatic bicycle kick off a Laurier corner and beat Harrington 18 minutes into the half. Western looked to secure the 2-1 lead and played conservative, keeping the ball in the neutral zone.
With 2:50 remaining, Golden Hawk Sean Malizia scored off a non-threatening play as Skoko jumped out and missed a loose ball. Western responded with a final chance but went offside at the Laurier eighteen.
The Golden Hawks captured the game’s final moments with Kardaras’ successful penalty kick after he was purposely tripped on a previous chance. Both teams finished with even shots, but Western could not capitalize on more corner kick opportunities to take the game. The Mustangs leave home field with an upset, but will undoubtedly return strong next September as mostly rookies and second year players composed this season’s team.
Laurier will now play York Lions in the OUA semi-final on Sunday, October 28 at 3:15pm. The Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders play the second semi-final in Hamilton at 4:00pm the same day.

Nipissing 0 @ Toronto 1 (4-3 PK)
The Varsity Blues men’s soccer team advanced to the OUA quarter-finals with a 1-0 (4-3 PK) win over the Nipissing Lakers on Wednesday night (Oct. 24) at Varsity Centre.
With the first-round win, the Blues will travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the top-seeded Queen’s Gaels this Sunday, October 28 at 3:15 p.m.
After a scoreless 120 minutes of action, which saw Toronto outshoot Nipissing 11-2, the game headed into best-of-five penalty kicks.
Team captain Darragh McGee (Donegal, Ireland) notched Toronto’s first goal in PK’s, with Nipissing’s Graham Dufort missing the net high to give the Blues an early advantage.
U of T’s Ezequiel Lubocki, Ryan Sciacchitano and Killian Elkinson also scored to put the Blues up 4-3.
Fourth-year Lakers veteran Scotty Hoogcamp (Trenton, Ont.) stepped up to keep the visiting team alive, but Blues rookie goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart came up with the stop to seal the win.
Trent goalkeeper Andrew Richard (St. Catharines, Ont.) made 11 saves in the loss.
