Western 0 at Windsor 1
WINDSOR, Ont. - The 2013 playoff season was cut short for the Western Mustangs men's soccer team after being edged out by the Windsor Lancers 1-0 on Wednesday night.
It was the third game of the season between the two sides, with Western holding an 0-1-1 record against the Lancers in 2013. After facing off against the Lancers twice already Wednesday's game was expected to be another tightly played contest, and despite a tough fought match, the Lancers were able to secure their second victory over the Mustangs this season.
With the loss, the Mustangs have now been eliminated from the OUA playoffs while the Lancers advance to the OUA quarterfinals this weekend against either the York Lions or McMaster Marauders.
In the first half of the contest the Lancers were able to put themselves on the scoreboard first, as Windsor's Cristian Mayorga found the back of the Mustangs net just 10 minutes into the game. The Mustangs continued to battle hard to try and cut the Lancers lead, and with a strong offence the purple and white were able to outshoot the Lancers, firing off six shots on Windsor goaltender Dejo Olagbegi. Despite having opportunities to even the score, the Lancers held onto their 1-0 lead heading into the break.
In the second half the Lancers offence came out strong and were able to rack up six shots on Mustangs goaltender Adam Majer. The Mustangs offence continued to battle and forward Christian Douglas appeared to have put the Mustangs on the board late in the half, however what would have been the game tying goal was called off due to an offside.
Western continued to battle until the final seconds, however the Lancers walked away with a 1-0 victory.
The Mustangs finish the 2013 campaign with a 10-8-3 overall record including exhibition and playoff games, and now turn their attention to the off-season before beginning preparations for the 2014 season.
