CIS menâ??s soccer championship: Laval holds on to beat Ryerson
The RSEQ champions, who had to settle for fourth place on home turf at last year’ CIS tournament in Quebec City, will play in Friday’s second semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Atlantic Time. They await the winners of a quarter-final duel between host UNB and Saskatchewan.
As for the OUA finalist Rams, in their first-ever appearance at the competition, they move to the consolation side of the draw and will square off against the losers of the UNB-Saskatchewan contest Saturday at 4:30 p.m. AT.
Laval jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half but then had to hold on for the win.
“I’m happy that we won but I’m not satisfied with the way we won,” said head coach Samir Ghrib. “We were up 2-0 and the keeper had three shots on goal and psychologically the game changed for us. But we won and we will learn from our mistakes. The important thing is that we won.”
Fabrice Lassonde, a fourth-year senior from Mont-St-Grégoire, Que., opened the scoring 22 minutes in on an assist from all-Canadian striker Patrice Dion. Only 13 minutes later, Nafi Dicko-Raynauld of Montreal, also a CIS all-star this season, doubled the Rouge et Or advantage.
“We started slow today in the first half,” said Ryerson associate coach Filip Prostran. “They didn’t step up.”
Only 10 seconds into the second period, the Rams cut the deficit in half thanks to CIS player of the year Alex Braletic of Thornhill, Ont., who scored on a tricky shot from behind the starting line.
Dion, who hails from Quebec City, restored Laval’s two-goal lead in the 69th minute but Ryerson came right back in the 73rd when Armin Tankovic converted a penalty kick.
“We made a mistake on the first Ryerson goal but after that we stayed strong, our defenders stayed strong,” Ghrib said. “They made mistakes, we made mistakes, but we stayed strong and came out as the victorious team.”
“I think this team fought right to the end like we always do, it wasn’t for a lack of effort,” said Prostran. “Our wings are good, I thought our keeper played very well, there was just a rough 20-minute spell where they got their goals and we just couldn’t keep up.
“For the seniors, it’s the last time they play with these guys and when you lose you’re sad and when you win you’re happy.”
Ghrib, who led the Rouge et Or to their lone CIS title in 2009, said his troops need to make fewer errors if they hope to capture another Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy.
Dion and Braletic were named player of the game for their respective side.
