Ottawa, ONT - The Ontario University Athletics Swimming Championships continued Friday at the University of Ottawa's Montpetit Hall. Just as they did on Thursday, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues were responsible for establishing several new conference records and currently lead both the men's and women's team standings with one day of competition remaining.
On the men's side, the University of Toronto holds a commanding lead with 676.5 points after Day Two. The Western Mustangs (386.5), McMaster Marauders (349), University of Ottawa Gee-Gees (287) and University of Guelph Gryphons (277) round out the top 5 teams.
The Varsity Blues also lead the way on the women's side with 599 points, followed closely by the Mustangs (525). The Gryphons (314.50), Gee-Gees (309) and Marauders (301.50) have some ground to make up heading into the final day of competition.
After opening the championship on Thursday with a record-breaking 100m backstroke performance, Varsity Blues Kylie Masse broke three-time Olympian Joanne Malar's 20-year-old 200m individual medley record (2:12.86) with a time of 2:12.78 in the first race of the night. Masse wasn't done there as she established a new OUA record in the 200m backstroke, setting a new standard of 2:09.80.
The Blue's women continued their record setting roll in the third race of the night, when Paige Schultz improved on her own OUA record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.10 seconds.
Toronto's 400 women's medley relay team of Vanessa Treasure, Sherry Patel, Kylie Masse and Jennifer Tapley broke the fourth record of the night in a time of 4:10.06.
The Blues captured eight gold medals in 14 events on Day 2 and have won 18 going into Saturday.
Western's Robert Wise won the men's 1500 freestyle race in a time of 15:43.11 and completed the grand slam with his fifth gold medal in the event. Wise was followed by fellow Mustangs Jake Silverthorn (15:46.46) and Alex Paulins (15:52.32) as Western swept the podium.
For the host University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, Robert Bonomo captured his second gold medal of the meet in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:58.16. Bonomo wasn't done there as he edged Toronto's Edward Liu in the 50m fly (24.83). Yesterday, Bonomo won the 100m backstroke (54.88) and has three gold medals heading into the final day of competition.
After finishing second in the 50m free yesterday, Guelph's Evan Van Moerkerke captured the Gryphons only gold of the day when he won the 100m free event in a time of 49.55.
