TENNIS ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED
HAMILTON, ON - Two weeks after the first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships of the 2004-05 season were awarded to the top tennis teams in the conference, the OUA is pleased to announced this year's tennis all-stars as voted on by the coaches.
Three of the six players making up the men's team were from The University of Western Ontario Mustangs, who successfully captured their third straight OUA title. Leading the Mustangs was fourth-year veteran Rob Schmidt (London, ON). Schmidt, who claimed the OUA individual championship twice before it was removed from the competitive structure two years ago, dropped only one match all season. Western MBA student Andrew Nisker (London, ON), a former Davis Cup player who held world rankings in singles and doubles, was honoured, as was teammate Alex Redil (Mississauga, ON). The rookie is a top ranked Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) under-18 junior, who has won the Ontario closed under-18 title junior championship.
Though his team finished fourth at the championship tournament, York University Lion Ash Misquith (Edmonton, AB) received his first all-star selection. A first-year Physics student, Misquith was the only player to defeat Schmidt this season. Fourth-year veteran Conor Casey (Oakville, ON) from McMaster University received the lone all-star selection for the Marauders, who finished with the silver medal. From Brock University, Cambridge, Ont. native Andrew Bates added his first all-star selection to go with the bronze medal the Badgers picked up.
On the women's side, the OUA champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues had two standouts named to the all-star team. Laura Ozolins (Toronto, ON) went undefeated in 2004 as she led the Blues to their first OUA women's tennis crown since 1984. Assisting Ozolins was sophomore Isabel Jarosz (Toronto, ON). With these second-year athletes at the helm, the Varsity Blues women's tennis program should be contender for years to come.
McGill University's Cheren Baysan from Mclean, Virginia, was honoured with an all-star selection as the rookie helped lead the Martlets to a silver medal this season. McGill, along with the Varsity Blues, became the first teams this season to defeat the York University Lions in three years.
York veteran Pei Chun Chu, from Kawaguchi, Japan, added an all-star selection to her already established OUA career. The fourth-year student has been a staple with the York Lions and their three consecutive titles. The journey for an unprecedented fourth ended this year with a fourth-place finish.
Rookie Alison Nash (Ancaster, ON) from the bronze medalists Western Mustangs and Kasia Poplowski (Brampton, ON), a third-year Business student from Wilfrid Laurier University, rounded off the women's all-star team.
