Lions go 3-1 on final weekend of OUA regular season
The York University Lions tennis teams went a combined 3-1 against the McMaster Marauders and Montreal Carabins on the final weekend of the regular season at the Tennis Canada Courts.
The women's team ended the season undefeated for the second year in a row, finishing with a dominant 7-0 win over the Marauders and a narrow 4-3 victory over the Carabins, who finished behind the Lions as OUA silver medallists last year.
The men's team, meanwhile, had a strong weekend with a 6-1 win over McMaster and a tight 4-3 loss to Montreal to finish the year 2-4.
Rookie Nikki Carnovale (Woodbridge, Ont.), playing out of the top spot, Isabella Baston (Toronto) and Julia Khalilova (Etobicoke, Ont.) won both of their singles matches on the weekend to lead the Lions. Carnovale also partnered with Eugenie Lim Ah Tock (Curepipe, Mauritius) for a pair of doubles wins.
The men also had two players to sweep all their matches in Filip Obucina (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Tre Eli (Toronto), who both went 4-0 in singles and doubles. They earned the Lions' two singles points against the Carabins and also won their doubles matches, Obucina alongside Pranav Yardi (Mississauga, Ont.) and Eli with Kevin Borsos (Everett, Ont.).
Both teams will be off Thanksgiving weekend and will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 when the Lions host the 2015 OUA championships throughout the weekend. The women will be looking to win their second straight banner, while the Lions will be eyeing a rise from their seventh-place showing in 2014.

Men's tennis wrap up season with sweep over Carleton, loss to Western
The Warriors were dominant against the Carleton Ravens when the two teams met on Saturday at the Waterloo Tennis Club.
Clearly the stronger team, the Warriors men won all their matches quite handily. John Chan (Whistler) went the entire match without dropping a game in either singles or doubles.
The Warriors will face a much stronger team on Sunday when they host the Western Mustangs, the defending OUA champions. The match will be the last of the regular season.
Waterloo hosted the Western Mustangs for the first time in many years but home court proved to be no advantage. The Mustangs, the defending OUA champions , always a strong team, have been especially dominant for the past two years.
In doubles action, The Mustangs won two of the three doubles matches but not without a battle from the Warriors. John Chan (Whistler) and Eddie Wang () playing at no. 1 won 8-3.
In singles, Chan kept his winning record intact beating Andre Szilvassy 6-1, 6-1 and Wang, his doubles partner recorded the only other singles win. Nate Flach (Toronto) at no. 5 lost a close one in the super tiebreak 10-7. Flach roared back from a first set loss to even the match before bowing out in an entertaining third set super tie-break. Though beaten, the Warriors played well and were not discouraged by this defeat which was the last match of the regular season.
The OUA championships, hosted by York University this year is set for October 16 –18 at Mayfair East.

Warriors defeat Carleton, fall to Western in final matches of regular season
Like their male counterparts, the women's tennis team had a big win dropping only one point in a 6-1 victory over the visiting Carleton Ravens. The Warriors started well by winning all three doubles matches and gaining the doubles point. In singles the only loss was Lucy Yao (Whitby) at no. 1 in a third set super tie-break 8-10. Rookie Jessie Cui playing at no. 6 also went to three sets with her opponent but this time Waterloo came away with the victory when Cui battled back to win the second set in a tie break (5) and winning 10-5 in the super tiebreak which was played in lieu of a full third set.
In the last match of the regular season, the women Warriors faced one of the top three women teams in the league. In a reverse of Saturday's score, it was the Warriors turn to be overwhelmed by stronger opponents. The home team played well but they were simply outmatched. Nicole Holland (Oakville) put up some resistance in her match in the second set against Chantal Forristal, a seasoned veteran and a regular contender for the OUA all-star team. Waterloo's only point came from a default when an opponent defaulted with a shoulder injury. The match had been close up to that point.
The Warriors next match will be at the OUA Championships hosted by York University Oct 16-18 at the Mayfair East and Parkway locations in Toronto.
