LACROSSE SEASON OPENS ON SATURDAY
Five teams will be in action this weekend, including the host Martlets. Making the journey east across the provincial border include the Laurier Golden Hawks, Toronto Varsity Blues, Queen's Gaels and McMaster Marauders.
The Golden Hawks are the defending five time OUA champions, having won six titles in school history. Laurier defeated Queen's 9-6 last October with OUA Most Valuable Player Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, Ont.) leading the way with a hat trick. Gerrie, who scored 17 goals last season, returns for her fourth season, but the Golden Hawks have lost some key components of their championship squad, including OUA Rookie of the Year Jayme Beard (Hawkstone, Ont.) who went south to join the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Other OUA All-Stars returning to the turf include Amy Fincham (Whitby, Ont.) and Britt Boynton (Orillia, Ont.) of Laurier, Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) and Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) of Toronto, Guelph's Callie Millar (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.), and Martha Ross (Newton, Mass.) and Lisa McLaughlin (Whitby, Ont.) of Queen's.
Western returns Lindsay Doxtator (Southwold, Ont.) at attack, defender Laura Robinson (Peterborough, Ont.) and midfielder Nicole Pullen (Orangeville, Ont.), a rookie sensation for the Mustangs in 2007. New head coach Dave Hastings, a former Western Mustangs men's player, takes over as head coach. The Mustangs and Guelph Gryphons will begin their seasons on Sept. 20.
McMaster will showcase two top recruits in starting midfielder Jackie Heaton and goaltender Anna Goulding. OUA Coach of the Year Todd Pepper has his Varsity Blues team in fine form as they look to improve upon last year's bronze medal performance.
The OUA title will be awarded the weekend of Oct. 25 and 26 at Laurier. For the complete lacrosse schedule, visit OUA.ca.
