The Waterloo women's rugby program has found their next leader as Rebecca Delaney takes over the Warriors as head coach. Delaney makes the move from Brock where she led the Badgers for the past two seasons.
Delaney's background in coaching rugby runs deep having had various roles over the past decade. On top of coaching the Badgers, Delaney is the Director of the women's varsity rugby program at Appleby College and is currently the head coach of Rugby Ontario's U-18 women's program and the program lead of Rugby Ontario's U-18 women's sevens team.
"Rebecca's resume speaks for itself with a wide range of rugby experience at different levels" said Interuniversity Manager Chris Gilbert. "Having coached in the CIS the last two years, she understands how to successfully lead a group of student-athletes and we are excited to have her on board."
In addition to her extensive coaching background, Delaney played CIS rugby for three years at McMaster and 16 years at the Oakville Crusaders Rugby Club. Provincially, Delaney won the 2006 National Championship with the U-17 Ontario program and was the captain of the team in 2007 that won silver. She also won a national title in 2008 with Ontario's U-19 squad.
Her playing experience also extends nationally having played with team Canada in several different tournaments as part of their U-19 and U-20 programs, most recently a championship tour in the Bahamas in 2010.
"This is an incredible opportunity for me to join the Warriors at a very opportune time," said Delaney. "There is a good mix of young talent and established veterans in the lineup and I look forward to making Waterloo an OUA powerhouse once again. I pride myself on developing athletes into both great competitors and students, on and off the field."
Delaney will be busy this summer, looking to round out the Waterloo roster before competition starts in early September.
