HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Players of the Week for the period ending September 2, 2014.
OFFENCE: Dillon Campbell – 4th yr. – Laurier
Monday turned into a record setting night for running back Dillon Campbell.
Campbell shattered Laurier's single-game rushing record, going for a 293 yards on just 16 carries, averaging a jaw-dropping 18.3 yards per carry. Campbell also found the end zone twice, scoring two touchdowns in the Golden Hawks 53-17 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
One of those touchdowns came on a 98-yard run that eclipsed the previous school record of 263 yards set by Nick Cameron in 2005; it was also the longest touchdown run of Campbell's career.
It was a very promising start for Campbell as he attempts to defend his OUA rushing crown from 2013, and for a Laurier team eyeing the playoffs after a 1-7 season.
DEFENCE: Kwaku Boateng – 2nd yr. – Laurier
Not to be outdone by his teammate, Laurier defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng got his name in the record book on the other side of the ball.
After making OUA's All-Rookie Team in 2013, Boateng kicked off the 2014 campaign by terrorizing Toronto quarterbacks and recording a school record four sacks in a single game. That broke the previous record of three, which was shared by four players including Boateng's team mate Tommy Griffiths. Boateng also forced a fumble and recorded a half tackle for a loss.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Vincent Campbell – 3rd yr. – Ottawa
The third-year return man ran back a punt 72 yards for a touchdown in the Ottawa Gee-Gees 51-7 win against the York Lions.
Campbell finished with 125 return yards in the game, the most of anyone in Week 1. He was also the only player to return a punt for a touchdown, and got into the end zone once more with a 30-yard touchdown reception.
The Gee-Gees finished with 591 total yards of offence in the victory.
