RAVENS SURVIVE, WHILE BLUES ROLL OVER OUA CHAMPS
How odd it must have been for the Marauders to see their former standout guard wearing blue and white. Leading up to the McMaster versus Toronto contest, the subplot revolved around Ben Katz's first game against his old teammates. Katz starred for four years with McMaster, earning all-star selections and the respect of everyone associated with the Marauder program. Choosing to play his final year of eligibility for his father, Toronto's head coach Mike Katz, while working on a graduate degree, the backdrop to the match was set. It's a good thing there was an exciting subplot since the match was much more one-sided than many would have predicted. The Blues broke open a close game in the waning minutes of the first half, and went on to dominate the Marauders 92-58 in a matchup between two nationally ranked teams. The victory improves the 10th-ranked Varsity Blues to 2-0 on the early season, while seventh-ranked McMaster drops to 1-1 in OUA conference play. With McMaster trailing 30-20, and just over five minutes remaining in the opening half, McMaster guard Martin Ajayi (Hamilton) hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 30-23. The long-range shot seemed to awaken the home side, as Varsity scored 13 of the final 15 points and headed into to the lockerroom with a 43-25 lead. Toronto shot a blistering .607 (37-61) from the field, including eight-for-17 (.471) from beyond the arc. They also did an exceptional job of hanging on to the ball, committing only six turnovers on the night, while the Marauders coughed up the rock 15 times. Five players from the home side reached double figures. As his did last year, the Blues were led by the talented guard Dwayne Grant, who along with Rob Paris, tallied 18 points apiece. Veteran forward Mike Williams recorded 12 points and a game-high five blocks. Forward Adam Steiner (Dundas, Ontario) was the only Marauders to hit for double digits, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds. Katz scored seven points, in only 22 minutes of action.
Carleton 57, Western Ontario 53
Some wins aren't pretty, but they all count in the standings. The Carleton Ravens defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, 57-53, in London, Ontario to open up the OUA season with a 2-0 record. Despite an off shooting night from both teams, the game was exciting as Carleton led by just two-points, 28-26, at the half. The Ravens opened up an 11-point lead with five minutes on the clock but the Mustangs responded with three consecutive three-pointers to pull to within two points in the dying moments of the game. Carleton played patient defence to hold on to the victory. The Ravens shot just .435 (20-46) from the field while Western Ontario finished with 19-for-53 (.358) from the floor. Both teams combined for a .475 (19-40) shooting mark from the charity stripe. Osvaldo Jeanty (Gloucester, Ontario) led Carleton with 17-points. Third-year forward Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ontario) added eight points and a game-best 11 rebounds in the victory. Andrew Wedemire was the game's top scorer with 19 points and led the Mustangs, alongside Adam Ruickbie, with six rebounds.
Brock 96, York 85
Sixth-ranked Brock opened the OUA regular season with a 12-point victory over the York Lions. Both teams enjoyed spectacular shooting nights. The Badgers would shoot .609 (39-for-64) from the field including a school-record 15 three-pointers as they would connect on 15-of-32 (.496) from beyond the arc. York was 31-for-60 (.517) from the floor and outrebounded Brock 38-22. Senior guard Brad Rootes (Niagara Falls) would lead the way recording a game-high-tying 27 points, including 18 in the second half, as well as dishing out 12 assists for the double-double. With his 27-point performance, Rootes moved into 10th all time in Brock career scoring with 1,667 points surpassing Jamie Clark (1,660). Also in double figures for the Badgers were sophomore guard Mike Kemp (Niagara Falls) and senior forward Chris Keith (Burlington, Ontario). Kemp contributed with 21 points shooting nine-for-14 from the floor while Keith registered 15 points and five rebounds. York had four of their five starters in double figures, led by forward Jordan Foebel (Ancaster, Ontario) who recorded a game high 27 points, shooting 12-for-16 from the field and grabbed 10 boards to complete the double-double. Fifth-year forward Dan Eves (Barrie, Ontario) contributed with 20 points.
