Led by DJ Turner's overtime goal, the Lancer men's hockey team earned a 5-4 overtime win over York on Thursday night at Windsor Arena.
The fifth-seeded Lancers (15-12-1) lead the best-of-three series 1-0 over the Lions (14-10-2), with the rest of the series slated for Canlan Ice Sports this weekend in Toronto.
Turner's goal capped off a thrilling night of hockey in which the Lancers led on three separate occasions but saw the Lions tie the game up each time.
The scoring began early in the first period when Windsor forward Ryan Green found the back of the net just 3:20 into the frame for the early 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later the Lancers extended their lead to two on a goal by Brett Oliphant. Assists were credited to Derek Lanoue and Tom Craig.
The Lions then capitalized on a power play opportunity when Evan Gravenor scored to cut the Lancer lead in half with just over one minute left on the clock.
York tied up the game 4:21 into the second period on a goal by Jordan Davies. The tie game was short-lived, however, as the Lancers pulled ahead again thanks to Cory McGillis' marker on the power play.
The Lions again took advantage of a late penalty by the Lancers at the end of the second, scoring their second power play goal of the game off the stick of forward Paul Clancy to again tying the game with two and a half minutes left in the period.
The Lancers held the edge in the frame, outshooting the Lions 12-9, and the two teams headed into the final period tied up at 3-3.
Once again the Lancers took a one-goal lead, this time on a goal by veteran defender Matt McCready at the 10:35 mark of the final frame.
The Lions again managed to tie things up, getting the equalizer from Jeremie Perron with less than four minutes to go.
Neither team was able to capitalize on any scoring chances in the remaining minutes, sending the game into sudden death overtime.
Despite being out-shot 3-1 in the extra frame, Turner made good on the Lancers’ lone shot, firing a rocket past Perugini for the win.
Defenceman Christian Steingraber led all Lancers with three assists.
Lancer goaltender Parker Van Buskirk turned away 39 of 43 shots he faced, while York’s Perugini finished the night with 34 saves.
The series will now shift back to Canlan Ice Sports in Toronto for Game 2 on Saturday (Feb. 18) beginning at 7pm. Should a third game be necessary, it will be played on Sunday (Feb. 19) at the same time.
Laurier Golden Hawks (8) @ Western Mustangs (1)
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs edged the Laurier Golden Hawks 4-2 to take Game One of the best-of-three OUA West Quarterfinal series on Thurs. Feb. 16 at Thompson Arena.
Andrew Eastman, Keaton Turkiewicz, Steve Reese and Kevin Baker scored for the Mustangs as Zack Woolford and Joseph Vanni added goals for Laurier.
The Mustangs special teams, which have been struggling as of late, were put to the test early as Laurier’s Tyler Stothers was called for tripping less than five minutes into the game. Western’s power play unit worked the puck around in Laurier’s zone, looking for an open lane. Shaun Furlong protected the puck behind the net and made a swift pass out to left defenceman Eastman who pinched down low. Eastman fired a one timer at the net as soon as the puck hit his stick to put Western up 1-0.
Only fourteen seconds later, the Golden Hawks were called for another infraction and the Mustangs power play went to work in the opposition’s zone. Mustangs Zach Harnden gained possession of the puck and fired a pass from the bottom of the right circle through the crease. The puck soared past the Golden Hawks defenders and onto Turkiewicz’s stick as he tapped home Western’s second goal.
Reese added the Mustangs third goal before the end of the first frame as he picked up speed and streaked down the left wing. Reese cradled the puck along the boards and beat both defenders on the outside. Reese cut hard to the front of the net and tucked the puck past Laurier’s netminder Ryan Daniels on the far post.
The second period saw hard checks and quick plays but neither team could find the back of the net.
Laurier started the third period with more intensity than the previous 40 minutes as they caught the Mustangs on their toes, notching their first goal at 3:27.
The Golden Hawks had a second goal called off just over a minute later on a controversial play as the puck squeaked through Mustangs’ netminder Josh Unice’s legs, but the net wasn’t in place. Laurier bounced back with determination as Vanni jammed a loose puck past Unice off a scrum in front of the net for a 3-2 game.
Baker added Western’s fourth goal as the puck bounced around in front of Laurier’s goal.
Head coach Clarke Singer was happy with the team’s power play performance, noting, “With how Laurier kills (penalties), you want to try and get the puck down low and look cross-crease and I thought we did that on a couple of our goals.”
“We got the two points tonight, but tomorrow night’s a brand new game, it’s 0-0 again. We’ve got to go out and try to get the win because we don’t want to come back here and play game three,” Singer added.
The Mustangs will travel to Laurier tomorrow Feb. 17 for Game 2 of the best-of-three series at 7:30 p.m. Western will return home on Sun. Feb. 19 for Game 3 at 7:30 p.m. if necessary.

Thursday night’s OUA quarter final matchup between the Lancer women’s hockey team and the Guelph Gryphons saw both teams play strong defence throughout, with Windsor taking an early lead and holding on for the hard-fought 3-2 victory.
Windsor now takes a 1-0 lead in the best of three matchup, with game two set to take place this Saturday February 18th at 4:10pm at South Windsor Arena.
Leading the Lancers in scoring was Jane Gaffney, who netted two goals on the evening, with Ally Strickland tallying the third. Candace Rapchak, Manon Davis, Candice Chevalier, and Kayla Dodson were all credited with an assist on the night.
The first period opened with both teams getting early scoring chances and Windsor getting a quick goal from Strickland, with assists going to Chevalier and Dodson. Windsor maintained their 1-0 advantage heading into the break thanks to an 11-6 shot advantage.
In the second, Windsor again got out to a fast start, coming inches away from extending their lead in the opening minutes. A turnover in the Gryphon end turned into a two on one for the Lancers, and after some nifty moves behind the net, Rapchak found Gaffney in the slot to extend the Lancers to lead 2-0.
From there, the Gryphons pumped Lancer goaltender Julia Ouroumis with shots, eventually putting one past year to cut the Lancer lead in half heading into the third period.
Both teams came out of the third playing strong defence, with scoring opportunities coming at a premium. Windsor scored their third goal of the game after a Guelph turnover led to a great individual effort by Windsor’s Davis, which was finished by Gaffney jamming home her second of the game.
A solid Lancer defence prevented the Gryphons from getting any quality shots on net, as Guelph tried to cut into the Lancer lead.
Jessica Pinkerton scored her second goal of the game for the Gryphons with just over a minute remaining to make it a one goal game. The Lancers held off the Gryphon attack in the final minute to earn the win.
Ouroumis made 28 saves in net for Windsor to earn the win.
The puck will drop for game two at 4:10pm on Saturday at South Windsor Arena.
