TRACK & FIELD ROUND UP: A look at the early meets from the OUA season
The Ontario University Athletics (OUA) track and field season began prior to the holiday break and has continued into the new year.Meets held at Guelph, Western, and York are allowing the elite university athletes in the OUA to fine-tune their form in preparation for the OUA Track and Field Championships being hosted by York University on February 21 and 22.
Here is a look at several of the events that have already taken place on the OUA track and field calendar.
Season Opener hosted by Western
LONDON, Ont. - The Western track and field team dominated the podium in a number of events on Saturday, November 30, as they hosted the Bob Vigars Season's Opener at Western's Thompson Arena.
The Mustangs women painted the podium purple as Western athletes finished first in 13 events, and filled the top three spots in six events on Saturday. In the Women's 600 Metre, Madison Halls finished first with a time of 1:36.72. Mustangs teammate Jenessa Olson followed in second with a time of 1:37.07, while Genny Cyrenne ran 1:37.98 to finish third.
In the Women's 60 Metre Hurdles Western's Shaylyn Kowalchuk took the top spot, finshing with a time of 8.91 seconds, while teammates Zaria Storm and Brianna Wilson finished second and third with times of 9.18 and 9.21 respectively.
In the Women's Pole Vault Robin Bone secured a first place finish with a vault of 3.80m while Mustangs teammate Gesthika Kaltsidis followed in second with a 3.25m vault and Sharon Michalak took the third place spot on the podium with a vault of 3.10m.
Similarly in the Women's Long Jumpn, Jodian Daley finished first in the event with a personal best jump of 5.67m, while Mustangs teammates Lauren Thomas and Zaria Storm finished second and third with leaps of 5.51m and 5.40m respectively.
The Women's Triple Jump saw Western's Kristen Gibson take the top spot with a jump of 11.60m, while teammates Aaliah Frazer and Leah de los Santos finished second and third with leaps of 10.99m and 10.52m respectively.
The sixth event that the purple and white women dominated was the Weight Throw as Alex Mara finished first with a throw of 12.96m, while Brindley Jantzi and Stephanie Sheppard placed second and third with throws of 12.68m and 10.52m respectively.
Brooke Hoxar had an impressive performance in the Women's Shot Put, as she threw a personal best of 13.22m to propel herself to the top of the podium in the event. Hoxar's throw was just 15cm shy of the CIS standard.
The Mustangs men also put forth some impressive performances in Saturday's meet, as Western competitors finished first in 10 events, while Mustangs athletes dominated the podium with the top three finishes in four events.
In the 60 Metre Hurdles, Mustang Isoken Ogieva finished first with a time of 8.35, while teammates Keith Cyrus and Chris Robertson followed in second and third with times of 8.66 and 8.83 respectively.
The Men's Pole Vault saw Western's Matthew Diston finish first with a vault of 4.55m, while Mustangs Morley Willoughby and Brian Choja took second and third place with vaults of 4.30m and 4.20m respectively.
Taylor Stewart took the top spot on the podium in the Men Long Jump Open with an impressive jump of 7.41m. Stewart's event winning leap broke his meet record in the long jump, taking only 14 strides to make the jump even more impressive, and was well above the CIS standard of 7.14m. Following in second place in the event were Western's Omar Fayoumi with a 6.35m, while teammate Chris Robertson rounded out the podium with a third place leap of 6.30m.
Overall, the Mustangs track and field team displayed a number of impressive performances and demonstrated to OUA competitors that they will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses. The Mustangs will be back in action in the New Year when they compete in the Can Am Invitational in Windsor, Ont., on Friday, January 10.

Xmas Open hosted by York University
Members of the York University Lions track and field team combined to reach the podium 31 times at the squad's 13th annual Xmas Open meet on Saturday (Nov. 30) at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.
Among those podium finishes were a total of 11 gold medals, including six by the women and another five by the men.
Bismark Boateng (Toronto), in his first meet with the Lions track and field team, had a tremendous day with a pair of gold medals in the 60m and 200m. He posted times of 6.89 seconds and 22.35 seconds, respectively, both personal bests in the distances.
Defending OUA and CIS pole vault champion David McKay (Victoria) began his season on the right foot by finishing in first place in the event at a height of 4.65m, while Harishan Karunenthiran (Brampton, Ont.) crossed the finish line in first place in the 1500m in a time of 4:07.01, a new personal best.
Fifth-year thrower Umar Khan (Markham, Ont.) led a Lions sweep in the shot put with a gold-medal throw of 17.25m that surpassed the CIS standard. Just behind him was Eric Brathwaite (Brampton, Ont.) with a throw of 16.03m that was good enough for the silver medal, and teammate Anojan Sivalingam (Scarborough, Ont.) won bronze with a distance of 14.91m.
On the women's side, rookie thrower Fatim Ammor (Oakville, Ont.) finished in first place in both the shot put and the weight throw, and her distances of 13.07m in the shot and 12.48m in the weight throw were both personal bests.
On the track, Tameran Defreitas (Barrie, Ont.) won the gold medal in the 200m in a personal-best time of 25.53 seconds, and was also second in the 60m in a season-best time of 7.81 seconds. Maria Markovac (Toronto) finished in first place in the 1500m in a time of 4:58.42, while Mikeisha Bobb (London, Ont.) won the gold medal in the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.18 seconds.
Rounding out the gold medals was the women's 4x200m relay team of Bobb, Sheereen Harris (Toronto), Holly Pitters (Mississauga, Ont.) and Defreitas, who crossed the finish line in a time of 1:45.89 to reach the top of the podium.
The Lions will be off for the month of December and will return to action the first weekend in January with both the New Year Open hosted by the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Jan. 3 and the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Jan. 4. The squad will next be at home when it hosts the annual York Open on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.

Guelph New Year Opener
A new year and the first full meet in the new Gryphon Fieldhouse brought out the best in the newest members of University of Guelph track and field team. Gryphon rookies captured five individual titles at the Guelph New Year Opener, highlighted by Mitchell Torres (Quinte West) a men’s high jumper and Madeline Yungblut (Wroxeter) in the women’s 3000 metres, both achieving CIS automatic qualifying marks.
Yungblut’s run was the most dominant of the meet, lapping the entire field in the women’s 3000 metres and posting the top ranked performance in the country. Torres’ jump of 2.02 metres was a personal best and part of an impressive showing from the Gryphon rookie jumpers who also registered wins in the men’s long jump Matt Fontanna (Grand Valley) (6.89) and men’s pentathlon Anthony Broeders (Wolfe Island) (3353). Fontanna is currently ranked second nationally in both the men’s long and triple jumps, while Broeders is the top ranked pentathlete in the early season rankings. Rounding out the Gryphon rookie wins was Brandon Shirk in the men’s 300 metres; Shirk won by nearly a second with a time of 35.66.
The Gryphons captured 26 events at the meet, other highlights included: Tim Hendry (Parry Sound) sweeping the men’s throws events posting a CIS automatic qualifying throw in the men’s weight throw of 17.94 metres and winning the shot put with a best throw of 17.45; Pat Dufresne (Sault Ste. Marie) winning the men’s triple jump with a mark of 14.25, a mark that ranks him first in the CIS, one spot ahead of where he finished at last year’s championships; Julia Wallace (Whitby) winning the women’s triple jump in a mark of 12.39 metres. Wallace, the Gryphons’ master of all trades, automatically qualified for her third event at the CIS Championships and is currently ranked first in the country in all three events the women’s long, triple and high jump.
Other Gryphon female winners were: Kerry-Ann Cornwall (Guelph) (60 metres), Corinne Smith (Oakville) (600 metres), Nadine Frost (St. Andrews) (1000 metres), Genevieve Lalonde (Moncton) (1500 metres), Tomeizel Barry (Waterloo) (60 metre hurdles), Erika Fiedler (Kitchener) (pole vault), Sarah Dougherty (Renfrew) (shot put and weight throw) and Jessica May (Binbrook) (pentathlon).
Gryphon male winners were: Benoit Boulay (North Bay) (1000 metres), Steve Holmes (Port Hope) (1500 metres) and Paul Worndl (Kitchener) (pole vault).
The Gryphons will be back in action next weekend at the Can-Am Classic hosted by the University of Windsor. Their next home meet will be the Guelph Last Chance February 15th and 16th at the Gryphon Fieldhouse.

Sharon Anderson Track Meet hosted by the University of Toronto
The University of Toronto’s Athletic Centre Field House played host to the Sharon Anderson Track Meet over the weekend to kick off the 2014 portion of the indoor track and field season. The event saw athletes from several OUA schools as well as numerous athletes representing track clubs from around Ontario.
