CIS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: York's Bingham has a record breaking performance
EDMONTON (CIS) – One record fell during the opening day of the 2014 CIS track and field championships, held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, while the men’s standings belong to the Windsor Lancers, and the women’s standings feature a tie at the top between the defending champion Calgary Dinos, and the Guelph Gryphons.

Sophomore sprinter Khamica Bingham, of the York University Lions, established a new CIS record in the women’s 60m dash by stopping the clock with a time of 7.26, which bested the previous record of 7.31 which was set in 2009. Bingham, who previously raced with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, a team she helped set a new CIS record in the 4 x 200m relay event last year, blew away the field in Edmonton in the 60m dash. Entering the championship with a seed time of 7.23, the second-year sprinter claimed gold with a time of 7.26, while Marissa Kurtimah, of Guelph, and Jalicia Clarke, of Windsor, finished second and third, respectively, with times of 7.52 and 7.53.
In the men’s standings, the OUA champion Lancers hold a big lead after Day 1, as they sit in first place with 23 points, while the York Lions are second with 12 points and the Sherbrooke Vert Et Or are third with 11 points.
“It was a really good opening day,” said Lancer Branden Wilhelm “In the pent, we came in ranked No.2 and No.4, but finished No.1 and No.2, which was a repeat performance from last year, so that was a great way to end Day 1. And really, across the board, our whole team performed well, so it was a great day for us.”
Wilhelm and teammate Jesse Drennan finished with gold and silver in the pentathlon, while the Lancers also racked up top four finish in the 60m.
Despite missing a key competitor, in 2014 CIS Female Track Event Athlete of the Year Jenna Westaway, who is competing for Canada at the World Indoor Championships in Poland, the defending national champion Calgary Dinos are tied for first in the women’s standings, at 19 points, along with the Guelph Gryphons. Windsor is in third place with 18 points.
“Of course we would have loved to have Jenna here with us this weekend, but all the best to her at World’s, and we’re very proud of her. We’re going to band together as a team and do the best that we can,” noted Dino pentathlete Rachel Machin. “We’re tied for the lead without her performances, but I think if everyone can just go a little above and beyond in what they can do, we’ll be golden.”
Machin, the 2013 CIS championship Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet, was a big reason why the Dinos found themselves in first, as she claimed gold in the pentathlon after finishing first in the 60m hurdles, high jump, and long jump, and finished second in the shot put. Teammate Rachel McIntosh finished second in the pentathlon as well.
“The competition went very well,” understated Machin. “It started off on an average note in the hurdles, but I was very, very pleased with my high jump and shot put. It’s always amazing to compete with the top 12 Canadian university girls.”
The men’s 60m sprint did not disappoint on Day 1, as Dontae Richards-Kwok, the 2012 CIS Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet, raced to gold with a time of 6.61. Saskatchewan’s Kenrick Hanna took silver, with a time of 6.69 while Harold Vulgaire of the Sherbrooke Vert Et Or picked up the bronze.
The first medals of the day were handed out in the women’s weight throw, as Lethbridge’s Kayla Gallagher, the No.1 seed, backed up her ranking by throwing for gold with a distance of 18.66m. Saskatchewan’s Tayrn Suttie, the 2011 CIS Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet, earned silver, while Guelph’s Sarah Dougherty claimed bronze.
Day two gets underway at 4:30 p.m. MT with the women’s shot put, and concludes after the 4 x 800m relays at 8:15 p.m.MT.
