TRACK & FIELD ROUNDUP: York Open provides a tune-up for OUA athletes
The York University Lions track and field team recorded 13 podium finishes, including four gold medals, at their annual York Open meet at the Toronto Track and Field Centre on Saturday (Feb. 1).
Thrower Brittany Crew (East York, Ont.) had another tremendous day, winning the gold medal in the shot put and the silver medal in the weight throw. Her distance of 15.51m in the shot put set a new meet record and further increased the school record she set one week ago. She also threw a personal-best distance of 16.96m in the weight throw, which qualified her for the CIS championships in the event.
The other three gold medals were won by the men's team. Jumper Richard Jansen (Bradford, Ont.) had a tremendous afternoon with a personal-best jump of 7.15m, which surpassed the CIS standard in the event. He also qualified for the CIS championships in the triple jump one week earlier.
Umar Khan (Markham, Ont.) recorded a season-best distance of 17.35m in the shot put to win the gold medal in the event, one spot ahead of teammate Eric Brathwaite (Brampton, Ont.), who won silver with a toss of 16.92m.
Fellow thrower Chris Preece (Cookstown, Ont.) won the bronze medal in the weight throw with a distance of 17.17m.
The last gold medal came courtesy of the 4x400m relay squad of Ayo Agusto (Toronto), Jameel Brown (Brampton, Ont.), Bismark Boateng (Toronto) and Ryan Charlton (Whitby, Ont.), who finished the race in a time of 3:21.83 to finish in first place.
Charlton and Agusto also won individual medals at the meet. Charlton finished in second place in the 600m in a season-best time of 1:20.24, and Agusto won the bronze medal in the 300m with a personal-best time of 35.03 seconds.
The three remaining individual medals also came on the track. Ingvar Moseley (Pickering, Ont.) won the silver medal in the 60m hurdles, Aleksandr Kuternin (Toronto) won the bronze in the 3000m and Giulia Ferrante (Maple, Ont.) finished in third place in the 600m.
The last two medals came in the men's 4x200m and 4x800m relays, which both finished in second place.
The Lions will be split at two different meets this season, with some members of the squad travelling to Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Invitational and the rest heading to Windsor, Ont., to compete in the Windsor Team Challenge.

Mustangs strike gold at York University Classic
TORONTO, Ont. - The Mustangs track & field team travelled to Toronto this weekend to compete in the York University Classic, earning 10 gold medals in the highly competitive tournament.
The women's track and field team had a number of impressive performances this weekend as they earned six gold medals overall.
In the 300m Brenna Thomson was the CIS top finisher, which was an incredible performance as she competed against three Olympians in the event. Mustangs' teammate Jen Barbon also competed in the event and finished in sixth. Thomson continued her strong performance in the 60m, as she earned a silver medal and was up against two Olympians in the event.
Caroline Ehrhardt continued her unbeaten streak as she took home the gold medal in the triple jump event with a leap of 12.73m. Teammate Aaliah Frazer finished third in the event with a personal best of 11.43m, while Emily Goad and Kelly Bedek finished sixth and seventh respectively.
Melissa Caruso took home the gold medal in the 1000m with a time of 2:56.60, while teammate Sarah Emilio finished seventh in the event.
In the 1500m event, Amanda Truelove was the top finisher with a time of 4:37.25. Teammates Julie Hambleton and Alicia Knox finished sixth and seventh respectively.
The rookie standout Mustangs rugby player, Breanne Nicholas, ran her first 600m race in this weekend meet and finished in fifth with a time of 1:40.75.
In the pole vault even, Robin Bone was the CIS top finisher with a season's best vault of 4.15. Bone also took home the silver medal in the 60m hurdles with a personal best time of 8.74. Teammate Shaylyn Kowalchuk followed closely behind Bone, finishing third with a personal best time of 8.77. Mustangs Brianna Wilson also finished eighth in the event with a time of 9.24.
In the 4 x 400 women's relay, the Mustangs team of Rachael Muma, Alejandra Gonzalez, Breanne Nicholas, and Jenessa Olson took home the silver medal with a total time of 4:00.66.In the women's 4 x 800 the Mustangs had three teams competing, and were the only teams in the race.
In the high jump event, Alexa James-Ashkewe finished in second with a jump of 1.60m.
Jodian Daley took second place on the podium in the long jump event with a jump of 5.48m, while teammates Lauren Thomas and Bedek finished fourth and sixth respectively.
In the shot put event Lydia Foley finished fifth with a throw of 12.17m, while teammates Julie Sleeth and Brindley Jantzi finished seventh and eighth with throws of 11.55m and 11.54m respectively. Foley and Sleeth also competed in the weight throw event where they finished fifth and seventh respectively.
The men's track & field team also posted a number of impressive performances in the York University Classic, as the team earned 4 gold medals overall and had 24 top-eight finishes.
Fifth year Mustangs Elias Granillo returned this weekend after a very serious hamstring injury that had kept him out last season, to post a time of 6.93 in the 60m and earn a third place finish amongst CIS competition. Teammate Jon Clarke also competed in the event and closely followed Granillo to earn fourth place in the CIS with a time of 7.11.
In the 600m, Triphon Moodie posted his season's best time of 1:22.07 to place fifth in the CIS, while in the 3000m, Kevin Blackney placed sixth with a time of 9:03.44.
Isoken Ogieva earned the top spot on the podium in the high jump event for the 2nd week in a row, posting a jump of 2.00m. Teammates Payam Saboni, Chris Cauley, and Adam Devon also competed in the event, with Saboni finishing fourth, and Cauley and Devon tying for fifth.
Ogieva went on to run the 60m hurdles final where he finished with a personal best and a third place finish amongst CIS competition with a time of 8.14. Mustangs teammate, Chris Robertson also competed in the event an finished eighth with a time of 8.57.
The men's 4 x 200 relay team of Cauley, Michel Giorgi, Stefan Poirier, and Todd Maclean finished fourth with a time of 1:34.05 while the 4 x 400 relay team of Cauley, Robertson, Rajiv Naidoo, and Myles Rombough took home the silver medal with a time of 3:28.76.
The Mustangs had two relay teams competing in the 4 x 800 relay event with both teams finishing in the top three. The team of Robbie Deeks, Donovan Hacking, Hunter Andrin, and Moodie took the top spot in the event with a total time of 8:11.65, while the team of Evan Porter, Josh Chackowicz, Lewis Kent, and Kevin Blackney finished third with a time of 8:27.92.
In the pole vault event, Matt Diston earned gold and tied his seasons best with a vault of 4.72m, while teammate Brian Choja was placed seventh with a vault of 4.22m.
In the long jump, rookie Riley Bell earned the bronze medal with a leap of 6.85m while teammate Omar Fayoumi was the fifth CIS finisher with a personal best jump of 6.59m.
In the weight throw event, Jesse Francis placed sixth with a throw of 13.80m
The men's triple jump is heating up to be the most competitive event to make the Mustangs OUA team. Taylor Stewart jumped into the mix with a 14.40m jump to win the event and to surpass the CIS standard of 14.16m. Keith Cyrus had a personal best of 13.94 to take the bronze, while Riley Bell, Josh Weinstein and Scott finished fourth, fifth and eighth respectively. The Mustangs now have five athletes in the CIS top 12.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Friday, February 7, as they travel Notre Dame, Indiana, to compete in the Meyo Invitational.
